Exclamation HIGHLY recommended PSU mod for A4000D users

...if you have crammed your A4000D with various hot, sexy and expensive expansions, chances are it gets very hot inside! After seeing some pics on amiga.org I decided to make the same psu-mod, cut the "ventilation" backplate of the psu and mod it a little... after doing this, the inside of the 4000 is cooler, and you can really feel the heat escaping! the voodoo3 alone produces too much heat, not to mention the csppc and the g-rex inside...

I did not invest much time to make the hole pretty, because I never see the back lol , but it does it's job!

My A4000 always draws blood whenever I open the case to add cards etc. By the looks of your hole your A4000 is positively a vampire even with the case closed!

Using two composite video cables for Audio, you philistine you!

LOL Alexh !!! Yeah I use them because they are unusually lenghty, I do have a small adaptor to plug paula on the 512i input...!

as for the "blood" no the hole is safe to touch, it has been grindenned with pro tools... but it looks bad because it is not a straight cut

I just took a flat blade screwdriver and bent the ridges open a bit wider when I still had my A4000 in a desktop case. That also helped the airflow quite a bit.

Unplug the computer first before inserting the screwdriver into the vent holes. :-D

I did open the vents too , (before the mod) but after the mod I see a huge improvement in heat!

That looks very nice keropi... if I had the tools I'd do something like that too. But for now I think I will just prise the vents a little wider.

I just used a hand grinder, that's why it also looks so lame... u can get a cheap "home-use" one for 10-15eur here.... and get a 1eur slim metal cutting disk... I used one for INOX ... and then I just hot-glued to the back ...

I know that Amigaz was thinking: "Damn, THAT'S an ugly PSU mod...!" and I could not rest with this in my mind... so after some rest, I made v2.0 of the mod :

looks better eh?

Nice work dude, when are you going to water cool the PSU? Now that is too cool and dangerous at the same time

Ok, you measured the temperature inside the case, and it's lower when you're using the sheet with smaller holes?

yes, _but_ I totally forgot that the psu's are from different makers... the one is Lite-On and the other the standar yellow-label one... so maybe except internal design they also have different fans? dunno... the backplates are different though...

That might be the clue..

I still think that your original mesh version is probably better in terms of airflow. :-)

I think the fist version is better. The one with the holes is not as effective.

I have those holes on the back of my Shuttle, I cut them away and temps dropped by 5 degrees!

Also it reduces the wind noise.
