original xbox for retrogaming?

Hello, is original xbox (yes, the fugly one) fine for MAME/SNES/Amiga emulation? I am asking 'cause homebrew/emulation for PS2 is rather joke.

Original xbox for me is still the best console for retrogaming. Especially Amiga emulation does not get better on any other console (though there are still some quirks).

Another vote for the original Xbox as a retrogaming platform. It's absolutely superb.

Yep the Xbox is an excellent machine for the price you can pick one up for. I am hoping things improve on the PS3 front for the next stage in the evolution.

Interested in this thread. Picked up a free one (got to love Freecycle!) a couple years ago with the intent on making it a MAME and Amiga platform.

You can do it via a few methods one via a save game exploit and a Action Replay or by doing a hotswap. Details here:

http://www.xboxscene.com/xbox-tutorials.php?p=151|#151

Or you can do a bit of both one which is to do a hot swap to copy the save game exploit over, then do the first like normal.

For me too the xbox is a great retrogaming machine.
It runs Neo-Geo games perfectly smooth, like on the real console (i have one !). Except for the very latest games if there really are to many things on the screen, like for Metal slug 3 or 4.

I have mine softmoded, didn't need to open it at all. had to buy "action-replay" tough, to get it to work.

Same for me

I hadn't... I used the Splinter Cell exploit and an USB key (plus an adaptor I bought), modified so that it could be seen by the xbox as an action replay card by the Windows software.
I don't remember the procedure, though... I wrote it somewhere.

Love my modded XBOX - put in a 250GB IDE drive and it can run SOOOOO many games.

They are also well built and have a nice simple design when you pop the hood, so are easy to work on.

Nice cabinet synchro - should fetch a tidy sum. Also CRT display is much better than a LCD for the budding modded XBOX enthusiast.

I have given the full details of softmods here on EAB many times. It's very easy. A bit old in the tooth the old xbox but great value for money.

PS3 3.55 is slowly becoming a better platform as is the JTAG'd 360

Not familiar with the pros and cons of the Reset Glitch Hack vs JTAG but I guess that opens up pretty much any 360 regardless of kernel version.

Don't know how easy it is to get VGA-out on the original Xbox, but if you combine it with a SLG3000 scanline box you may get a better looking output for an LCD/HDTV etc..

Demo vid of an X360 showing this (other vids also exist) - [ Show youtube player ]

Lots of chat about such things in the Shmups forum - hardware section - http://shmups.system11.org/

SLG3000 - http://www.arcadeforge.de

If you do a web search for the device you'll find some more reviews, opinions etc..

Q;

P.S. Scanlines are a personal taste thing I know, but some believe it improves on the default scaled LCD image..
