Question CD32 disc read problems

Hey, hope you're all having a great evening.

Not sure to whine or be happy about it but one of my CD32's has a real hard time reading original discs but it swallows any burned discs without complaint. The original discs are for the most part in new or really good condition and works great in my other CD32's.

I did change the whole CD-ROM in this unit a while ago since the the other one didn't read at all and the one I bought was promised to be working. Will probably buy a laser later on for the extra CDROM. When I tested it, it read a couple of original discs and the burned discs so I didn't think more about it. Until today when I decided to test some original games that I bought.

Isn't it usually the other way around, hard time reading burned discs and no issues with originals?

Has anyone else experienced something like this?

Thanks for any input.

Changing the laser is a really easy operation. I have 2 left hands and I did it successfully on my 2 CD32 machines (why does everyone have 2 CD32 machines ?)

be sure to buy real Sony Kiss210A parts. They're pretty easy to find and cheap.

If the potentiometer is set too high, yes it can only read CD-R and not original CD
Does it read audio CD well without skipping ?
Do you have adjusted the lens potentiometer before ?

Yep I'd second that the pot is set 2 high. Turn it down as soon as you get the chance to avoid burning out the laser. Its best to use a scope to get an exact figure but if you cant just turn it slightly and try again. Only turn it a faction at a time, it won't take much to get it back to the proper range.

Oh and this is the pot on the laser itself. DO NOT touch the pots on the cd drives circuit board.

Just change the laser, easier than messing with the pot.

messing with the laser pot doesn't hurt, I guess. It may make the laser work for a little while. But changing the laser works all the time.
