UAE history

us there some kind of history of UAE, who invented it first, what it was in its early days and who added what in time?

i know it born on UNIX ages ago, but the first time i tryed it was DosUAE already, in late 1997... however, i don't have very clearwhat it was before coming to Toni Wilen.

for instance, what does remain of the original program in its current form.

if there's something like that in the www, i guess there should be, can you point me to it please?

You may find some history at UAE's homepage, in particular on the Credits and Thanks page. Of course that's not a lot of information; You can probably find a lot of history in the source code itself and the more recent history of WinUAE and E-UAE in their respective source repositories. Yeah I know, I'm not helping.

I'll just subscribe to this thread myself and wait for the stories to roll in.

I remember trying uae in 1998 and I had a rubbish cyrix 266 and wow the games ran slow! I remember loading it came from the desert intro screen and it hardly ran!

UAE version was 0.8.7 (I think) when I started implementing AGA emulation, and it was included in 0.8.8. (maybe)

i remember that first page

also, one of the first uae pages i remember, was one failing to explain (due to grossy errors) how to transfer disks and kickstarts with transdisk and transrom, maybe in italian, maybe not...

there was also one with a screenshot of SotB 2, first level, with the game area surrounded by a rendition of the usual amiga monitor, 1084s?...
when has that "feature" dropped?

Just for the record, this was the first version I used, it didn't actually do anything except show the kickstart screen which took a good minute or two to appear on my 33mhz 486. Being an ex amiga owner, this was enough to know that soon my big collection of amiga stuff might actually work again :-). (Years, thats how long it took to get to a point where it was usable).

As weird as it might sound, the very first WinUAE versions were command-line, apparently.

I hope people aren't sending pirated copies onto Tony's email like it was the case in 1999 .

i did not remember that page, probably i skipped it altogether... i remember using DosUae and then WinFellow almost until '99 but after that i remember only winuae.net

Here are some 'historical" UAE releases, ripped form a 10 years old CD.

UAE 0.6.3 for DOS (1996). Usable A500 emulation (Turrican working) - at least on PentiumMMX-233 and PentiumII machines:

So I'm sure that it wasn't usable these days for playing games (chipset emulation), even on a very high-end x86 CPUs I moved to PC in 1998 (Windows9x), in the PentiumII era, and the "UAE experience" was mostly satisfying, although the WinUAE itselft was far from perfect.
It was possible (in 1998) to play some advanced A500 games on older machines (P-MMX 166MHz) using Fellow emulator for DOS (AFAIR adjusting frameskip was neccessary) but not on UAE/WinUAE. I may upload Fellow as well.
