Apidya - Inaccessible bonus stage (Speed of Light) FOUND!

Thought I'd start a new thread for this...

I wanted to convert the music for Apidya into mp3 so I could listen to it without the need of booting up winuae/uade/whatever...

I grabbed the music files from exotica and started to convert each levels' music, tallying them up to the level's and the bonus levels. All was fine.

Then I came to level 4. I found a track which didn't seem to appear in level 4 and I for one didn't know of any bonus level in level 4.

I took a look in the music test menu and came across the same track called "Speed of Light". I did a search on the net and found a few posts about people wondering where the track featured.

This intrigued me so I messed about with level 4 for a bit and came up with nothing...

So I contacted girv with my suspicions as he was currently working on the whdload slave.

Turns out I was right!

Quote:
There is a bug in a data table in level 4 that would prevent the "speed of light" subgame from ever starting. Two values were swapped which essentially said "move along, nothing to see here" even if you were at the right location to trigger the game.
girv assures me he has some pictures too so hopefully he'll add to this thread soon

Cool

Yeah, KG PM'd me about it then then took himself off to the pub for the night, leaving me to do all the actual work. If you're not in management mate, you should be

Some images are attached

The first shows the location, near the end of level 4, that you should be able to enter the subgame from if the data bug would allow it. The other two are shots from in the subgame itself. Its definitely a level 4 subgame as you can see from the background graphics and the techno look of the player sprite.

The gameplay is to fly through an obstacle filled cavern at increasingly ludicrous speeds until you hit something. Your score increases as you go, so the further you get the more points you get. I have a video of a run through the subgame (recorded with WinUAE) that is on its way to Google Video as I type. I'll post again later when it's available.

I've a new WHD patch under construction that fixes the data bug and so enables the "lost" subgame in normal play. The subgame runs fine on WinUAE but I need to run through it under snoop mode on a real A1200 to check for any lurking problems.

Does this count as an "Amiga Subgame That Weren't" ?

Yay some pictures!

Nice one girv.

Just wondering... does the music on the subgame change towards the very end? There are slightly different mods which sound VERY similiar but one is a higher tempo, thought it might change to that once you get a certain distance through the tunnel?

I wonder if it was deliberately removed due to the rather large similarity between this bonus stage and the ProjectX one.

Mhh....interesting guess.

Edit: But Apidya came out first, right?!

I think they both came out at roughly the same time, so any similarity in the bonus levels is probably coincidental.

From the nature of the bug, I'd say it was accidental. Though I'm surprised the authors didn't notice!

@ girv

Can the bug be fixed, to make it fully playable from within the game?

On it now. It would have been earlier, but apparently the world would have ended had I not gone shopping earlier

@Retro-Nerd: no bonus items, just the need for speed.

Which came before both Project-X & Apidya. So the winner of this idea is Turrican 2 !!.. but they are all brilliant games regardless!
