Yep, known about for a while, but until Olie's got a product it's developer forum more than anything.

If the V5 chip is as good as it looks, we're talking the equivalent of a 800MHz 68040 in terms of performance!!!! with local bus using SDRAM, USB, AC97 and the rest it's going to be the hottest h/w upgrade of the year, short of an AmigaOne running OS4

This beauty should be reasonably priced (that is hell lower than PPC boards). I always thought that coldfires was the way to go due to the low prices and enchanced performance. I can't wait to see on of those to go to production. One question though: would this fit into a desktop A4k?

I love 68K Asm. Intel x86 looks positively horrible in comparison (to me), and I was not aware that Motorola were continuing the lovely instruction set...

I would love to have seen this a few years ago!

According to Olli, he's doing a 1200 board first, then an A4K CPU slot board...

What I'd really like to see would be a board that plugs into the CPU slot and the zorro dughterboard slot for towered A4K desktops, so you could have zorro, Amiga video, ISA and PCI slots, as well as AC97 audio, and if the CPU plugged in on a seperate card, then you could have easy CPU upgrades... also the moon is made of green cheese and I'm flying porky airlines

shame though...

If Olli uses the V5 at anywhere near it's full speed.... you'll be looking at the equivalent of a 68040@800MHz... or more

How close is this to 68K language? Forgive me if it actually is based on 68K language, I know nothing about ColdFire

I see a few comparisons to '040 chips have been made, but will this be any closer to 68030 or 68020 in terms of compatibility? I've never owned a 68040, but heard that it had quite a few more problems with older software, especially games, when compared to '030 based accelerators.

I'm also assuming this design wouldn't have heat dissipation problems in an A1200's trapdoor. Shame the ram slot has to be laptop spec in the 1200 version, memory sticks are not going to be cheap!

Very interesting development though. I'm one of those people who doesn't want to change his Amiga too much, even prefer the A1200's shape to a tower. It just suits the technology being a small all-in-one unit. Compatibility is of course the crux for me when considering new alternatives to ye olde 68K chips, so PPC would be out of the question.

Board will come with CPU 'emulators' to match 020, 030 and 040 possible 060 to come. All full on, not EC versions.

if you know the relative per clock cycle performance difference between the chips, then you can work out a multiplier from the 040 figures. Or check Motorola's site (I haven't!) for their figures.
