ClassicWB Xmas Update Preview

Well peeps, it's that time of year once again approaching!

I know how annoying it is to have in your face whilst we're still in November, but if you can't beat them, join them:

Right, now you're in the mood, here is a little preview of the new features in the xmas ClassicWB packs that are currently WIP:
  • New Install script - option to upgrade all files to Workbench 3.1
  • Scout added to replace SysInfo in ADV and above versions
  • Launch Pad added as optional start console, with listers for WHDload demos & games!
  • AHI now standard in all versions
  • Picture datatype updated
  • BlazeWCP added to accelerate chunky writes if supported (default disabled)
  • ENV-handler added to save memory if enabled (default disabled)
  • New, better Icon Install program
  • OpenURL library added
  • New Copper Daemon effect and its Workbench screenmode limitation removed
  • Palette usage improved
  • Many additions and improvements to the LITE version
  • WBstartup drawer priority control added
  • Icons drawer attributes set to be "KillNewIcon" friendly

As you can see, quite a substantial update so far. I'm afraid I might not be able to provide an update pack for this release as it would be too time consuming to write the scripts and avoid changing user customizations.

What will probably happen is this will be released as v21F, and the last update pack for v20F users is the u2. If v20F users want future update packs, they'll have to start fresh with v21F. I apologise for the inconvenience, but I just don't have the free time to support update packs once they get too complicated and large - it becomes a nightmare with 4 separate packs to support and avoiding overwriting user settings.

Look on the bright side - I wasn't even going to improve these packs at all a year ago.

I'm sure you can find a way to keep the data and games - there is no need to reformat the entire partition when installing a new version without an update pack. For instance, you could just copy over certain drawers from the new pack.

Such a shame OS3.9 didn't like Scalos 1.2D, or it would have been supported as a full upgrade option just like 3.1 in the standard packs.

The OS3.9 pack is still on hold. It has to be built up from scratch so it's going to be a slow process as I only work on these packs as a hobby in moments of boredom.

AmigaSYS has it's AGA version out now though and I think that supports 3.9.

Hey no problem.

The update is now released and the preview holds true. It's really starting to feel like now peeps with my chocky calendar opening its doors; just waiting for the EAB Evil Snowman to appear at the top of the forum.

I'll try Retro-Nerd, although it's hard to remember everything exactly! I avoided adding anything that would make the install too large (like software) or affect memory usage in order to keep to its "lite" theme, but did add some useful features.
  • Option to upgrade ALL Workbench files to 3.1 if you have the disks
  • There is a new menu Launch bar like shown in the pics above
  • Games and Demos can be launched from a popup list box (again like shown above)
  • Copper Demon backgrounds are now available - See Here
  • Workbench start manager added to prioritise programs in the WBStartup drawer
  • Popup Menu redesigned for easier access to files
  • FullPalette added to lock and control colours
  • NewIcons can be enabled or disabled (default disabled)
  • Image2Icon added to create your own Newicons from pictures.
  • Fblit/FText can be enabled if you have Fastram (default disabled)
  • Env-Handler can be enabled to save RAM (default disabled)
  • BlazeWCP can be enabled for fast chunky writes (default disabled)
  • Multiboot Workbench has changed – more features.

There is probably more, but it’s hard to remember when I’m working between all the different packs and this one doesn’t have Scalos.

Smart Refresh (SmartWB on Aminet) was removed because I found some compatibility issues plus it used up more memory when opening Workbench windows (bad for 2MB users). This might mean some of the window drawing is slightly slower. Also, VirusZ annoyingly kept on thinking it was a virus in memory. You can download it from Aminet and re-install it in the WBStartup drawer if you wish.

I’m about to go and see if a replacement is any better – if it is, I’ll add it as an enable/disable feature.

Thanks for using my packs. Yeah, the LITE was due a little overhaul to bring it more in line with the normal packs.

Just tried a replacement for SmartWB, SmartWIN from Aminet. VirusZ still thinks it's a virus in memory. SmartWIN is meant to be a more complete solution than SmartWB, forcing smart refreshes for more than just WB windows, but I'm not going to include it due to the slightly higher mem usage and annoying VirusZ issue.

The FULL and above don't need this patch as Scalos takes care of it.
