It was just too punishing for most especially for any of today's audience or in fact those that used to play it even. As an experience it's good though. I find i can't stomach having to start completely over in games any more though and really that's it's biggest problem. Not really like they could do much else though with that design and they do give you lives in the form of energy and extra health

I think it's better than people say of it but i can totally understand why it gets grief

The thing is, if it was any easier, you'd have it finished very quickly like in under an hour or something

The first SOTB is not that bad imo. And definitely not so bad as SOTB2. Difficulty in SOTB2 totally ruins the game.

I think its the one of the nicest game for Amiga

The SOTB games are one of those controversial games which some like/love and others dislike or hate, call "s**tty etc. Thats why I like all of them, even when SOTB2 sucks

Speaking of SOTB2, the super elusive FM-Towns version has finally emerged on UG.

Really? I never thought this should see the light of day.

On the gameplay side, the programmers tried to improve the game by lowering the difficulty level, but the game feels nevertheless unplayable at times, due to the fact that enemies keep reforming forever and that their attack pattern are completly random and almost impossible to avoid.
Easy for Japan, unplayable for the rest of the world

Now reading laffer's comment on youtube in his longplay video:

since the game is so easy, I didn't concentrate at all and it shows.....Also, you can skip entire areas in this game due to the very low difficulty level, however I went everywhere to show the entire game.

I must be the only person in the world who loved Shadow of the Best and played it to death. I remember managing to remain alive for at least 70% of the game before I even learned about infinite lives. It's a good thing I didn't have the internet to tell me how bad it was back then.

YEP!! You're not the only one!!

It was hard tho...

I do agree with Bloodwych tho. A code system would have really helped for those who didn't want to play thru everything they had done after they die..
I wonder tho, would the game have been too short then???

Does anyone use WinUAE "save state" to do that now and does it make the game more enjoyable and/or too short???

I do remember playing SOTB II BITD and getting stuck in some pit once and I couldn't get out.. Not sure if it was a glitch or I was just missing something. I remember trying it for hours (so that would have been about 10-15 minutes.. ) before rebooting. Never happened again, although that might have been because I knew to avoid that spot.

I think that best part of Shadow of the Beast is start music
Atari ST's version . Despite it is technically inferior to Amiga one, it sounds better in artistic way - I mean fife sound on Atari, while Amiga version is like some electric organ more.
Game looks good, with big sprites and lot of colors for it's time, but that's all. Gameplay sucks, and with trainer you can finish in half hours, if falling not asleep
Btw. same thing with sound stays for game EPIC .

Intro music in Atari ST version is really good (no irony). In-game music is great as well
