Anyone know why it would be useful using the controller on a Wii? My main disappointment with that system is the crappy control system. I hate having to aim the nunchuk at the TV, give me a D-Pad controller every time.

Presumably I can't use a Nes controller (or even a GC controller) on Metroid Prime or Mario Galaxies?

This controller will work only wtih VC NES games. I am having issue with controllers on Wii, while my 7 year old has none... LOL, other day he with his friend played Star Fox Zero, separating controls into 2 - one driving/flying (tv screen) - other shooting (Wii touch screen)... real team work.

I think this looks interesting if they have done it properly (and being a real Nintendo product, they probably have). It could be a software emulation running behind it all, but when done properly, it is irrelevant since nobody can feel the difference.

Perhaps you could make a similar solution using a Pi and countless man-hours setting it all up, but then you'd still not have the nice retro-looking device to put underneath the TV. Most people in the target group just want to buy a finished product, hook it up and start playing. They can do exactly that with this product, so I think this should sell well.

Some online function to download/replace games would have been useful but I think the list is still quite good.

I think the main differences in feel between gaming on a NES back in the day and any form of re-release (wether an emulator or an actual NES-on-a-chip-with-HDMI affair) would be twofold:

1) high latency on modern displays. Almost all modern TV's have pretty huge latencies compared to CRT displays, most keep high latencies even in game mode. This changes the feel of the old games quite a bit as controls start to feel lagging behind even though it's the screens fault and not due to the game being bad.

2) displays these days are way too good. Where old games on a small CRT over RF/Composite may have been blurry, the blur did help hiding the really, really low resolutions used - Mario on a big HDTV looks really blocky compared to the same game on a small CRT.

That said, I'm still kind of looking forward to this. It's a neat sollution to the retro-game stuff.
