Floppy disk Getting into my CD32 - Game advice!

Howdy y'all! I need gto pick everyone's brains for a sec, as I bought a CD32 nearly two years ago now (!) but only ever managed to get Alien Breed: Tower Assault/2 working on it and, with my millenial lack of patience I gave up and moved on. Now, however, I have finally cracked it, and have several more games working on the machine (AB3D, Roadkill, Star Crusader and Nigel Mansell WC if anyone cared :P), but I'm a little overwhelmed by the sheer volume of titles, and skeptical of some of the shovelware games... So can anyone help me by recommending some titles? I'm happy to try just about anything really, as long as it's fun! I don't mind if they're homebrew or regular either, I'll be upfront, I just burn 'em to disc anyway!

Much thanks! <3

http://unofficial-cd32-ports.blogspot.co.uk is a good place for compilations of games with CD32 pad compatibility thrown in.

Liberation. Also, Liberation. Followed by Liberation. And then maybe a little Liberation.

Fantastic game. Enormous depth and detail once you really start exploring it.

Heya LianneJaguar64,

Welcome to EAB

Here's a link to CD32 games on HOL: http://hol.abime.net/hol_search.php?N_ref_hardware=6

...but very quickly without going through the entire list...

a) ATR: All Terrain Racing
b) Flink (The Misadventures Of)
c) Marvin's Marvellous Adventure
d) Overkill
e) Shadow Fighter
f) Simon The Sorcerer
g) Sixth Sense Investigations
h) Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe
i) Super Stardust
j) Super Street Fighter II Turbo
k) Trolls
l) Universe

Plus anything else released in the "custom built" CD32 disks by Amigajay or earok, which means you'll be able to play games that weren't specifically released for the CD32...

See the project.CD32 Conversion section

Official release wise my fav CD32 games that aren't just shovelware;

Banshee - nice aga release with cd track
Beneath A Steel Sky - Full talkie
Bubble & Squeak - Something about this game just makes me smile, great cd audio too.
Fightin' Spirit - great game anyway, even better with cd32 pad and cd audio!
Fire & Ice - only aga version of the game, nice cd audio
Flink - home to the only version for the Amiga
Guardian - released 1st for the CD32
Gunship 2000 - great all round package, aga gfx, cd audio
Liberation - Captive 2 - again released 1st for the CD32, top game
Nick Faldo's Championship Golf - the only aga version of the game
Pinball Fantasies - i know its a port of the aga version, but the whole package is sleeker and is a must have game for CD32 owners!
Pirates Gold! - another CD32 Amiga exclusive, great cd audio too
Roadkill - released 1st on the CD32, played many hours on this!
Simon The Sorceror - full talkie version
Super Stardust - great game, cd audio too
Ultimate Super Skidmarks - all the skidmarks action on one disc!

"Good Luck... You're gonna need it..."

I have fallen in love with Roadkill, the first non-Alien Breed game I played on CD32 XD my only gripe is the lack of inrace music... I reckon some minimalist synrh hard rock would have done it... Do I need a mouse for any of these? (I don't have one)

The only ones which would help more are the adventure games, but both from memory work using a pad fine.

As much as I like most of the "shovelware" and compilations of old games on the CD32 (as it is my main Amiga for gaming), I will give you a list of what is either exclusive to the CD32 or in my opinion a general better experience on it than on a regular Amiga

- Brian The Lion (I find this version to be the best)
- Castles II (CD32 exclusive)
- The Final Gate (CD32 exclusive, terrible game :P)
- Fire & Ice (Greatly enhanced for CD32, has parallax, choice of CD or classic soundtrack, generally the best version)
- Flink (CD32 exclusive)
- Jetstrike (Best version out there, great soundtrack)
- Labyrinth Of Time (CD32 exclusive)
- Legends (better played on CD32 IMO)
- Liberation (CD32 exclusive, probably the only proper made-for-CD32 game?)
- Litil Divil (CD32 exclusive)
- Microcosm (CD32 exclusive)
- Out To Lunch (best played on CD32)
- Pinball Fantasies (plays best on CD32)
- Pirates Gold! (CD32 exclusive)
- Prey: An Alien Encounter (CD32 exclusive)
- Skeleton Krew (same as the AGA version but the soundtrack on this one is ten times better)
- Speris Legacy (best played on CD32)
- Super Street Fighter II Turbo (best played on CD32, still a terrible game though)
- Ultimate Body Blows (CD32 exclusive)
- Ultimate Super Skidmarks (have it all in one disc? Hells yeah)
- Wing Commander (This is the only decent Amiga version)
- Zool 2 (Improved graphics and soundtrack plus a CD32-only level)

I think the CD32 is the best Amiga platform for games, so don't forget to check out the community-made compilations and unofficial releases too, all of which you can find here:
http://unofficial-cd32-ports.blogspot.com/

From those, my recommendations:
Compilations:
- Bitmap Bros Collection
- CD32 160 Game Compilation
- CD32 Compilation Volume 1
- CD32 Compilation Volume 2
- CD32 PD Compilation
- Heli Attack Triple Pack!
- Hybris & Battle Squadron
- James Pond CD32 Collection
- Lemmings CD32 Collection
- Liquid Skids / Snow Bros
- Mombasajoe's PD compilation (find it on EAB's server, in my folder Uploads/Akira)
- Shadow of the Beast Trilogy
- Turrican Anthology [CD32.co.uk]
- Ultimate Fighters

Single releases:
- Aladdin
- Cannon Fodder (+CDXL Intro)
- Heart of the Alien
- Jaguar XJ220
- Lion King
- Micro Machines
- Microprose Formula 1 Grand Prix
- Mutant League Hockey
- Putty Squad
- Slam Tilt
- Solid Gold BETA
- Speris Legacy (No copy protection)
- SWOS 16-17
- Uridium 2
- Wonderdog
- Worms (No copy protection)

Amigajay also has done a lot of work making unofficial compilations
http://cd32covers.blogspot.com
Some of my faves:

- Factor 5 : The Complete Amiga Works
- Graftgold : The Complete Amiga Works
- Psygnosis : The Complete Amiga Works
- Run 'n Gun Collection
- Team 17 - The Complete Amiga Works
- Vertical Shoot-Em-Up Collection

Hope that sorts you out!

Nice comprehensive list!

Btw Liberation is available for all Amigas, though it came out first on the CD32 and is easily the best version.

Really? I thought it was a CD32 exclusive. Thanks for that clarification.

Man the CD32 got no love. Exclusive games would have put it right at the front. What a shame.

The CD32 version came out mid December 1993 according to AP, though I couldn't get hold of a copy till mid Jan, the disk versions came out late Feb early March.
But it made people take notice of the CD32 more with multi format mags given it good ratings..then...damn you a Commodore etc!

You just need to get more super jackpots, then you get the music!

I don't have much to add to the list already given.

Guardian is a great game and very good with the CD32 joypad. I just wish the cd32 had a bit more horsepower to deal with the 3D.
