Black Amiga 500 project

I have been wanting to make a black Amiga 500 for a while! I have seen black 600's, and 1200's. Even a black 2000 and 4000! I had a CD32 keyboard I was saving for this purpose. The problem is I could not make myself to attempt to paint one of my three A500's which are all in mint shape! What to do? Seek out a 500 just for this purpose! Well one thing I was concerned with was that the logo would not look right on a black case. I could try to make my own or live with it? You can see someone did just that:

Well last week I went to RePC in Seattle (PC junk recycle store where they charge you to junk your stuff and then resell it to the public!!) as I heard they had some A500's. I wanted to buy one with the sole purpose to paint it black. But I have been holding out for a chicken lips case as it would be better for painting. I found one! $12 and listed as DEAD. No problem! It has the case I want and it looked ok. Just a bit dirty. Well here some pics on how it looked:

Fired her up to see what she does. White screen and drive is clicking! Hmmm.. Checked memory card as they are notorious for battery leakage. Yep batt leaked! Removed card. Still no juice.

Took her apart and pressed on all the socketted chips. Tried again and she fired right up! YEAH!!

I took the MB out and cleaned the cases and started painting it black. Had to do 3-4 coats! Once done I used the keys from my CDTV keyboard to transfer to the old 500 KB!

After all that tedious work I put it all back together!

I'll try to get some better pics as it is night time now. It looks amazing! Oh and please ignore the cat!!

YOU CDTV KEYBOARD KILLER!!!... usually black paint jobs don't photograph very well...

YOU BUTCHER!!! but yours looks very even, I can see a little unevenness but I imagine you can hardly notice it in the flesh...

I see an a500 and I want to paint it... black...

Great job in reclamation!!! liberate the A500's

I am surprised as to why you didnt just whip the A500 mobo out, and stick in an A1200 mobo, add a nice Optical drive and a CF card and a subtle slot for the PCMCIA

WOW! Someone have made my dreams come true!

I have also thinking to paint my A500 to black. I would use gold paint to highlight the AMIGA text in the top of the case... SWEET!

Hey TjLaZer, you're an Atari XL lover - why don't you make an "Amiga 500XL" as your next project? That was my plan - dark brown keyboard area, cream top (not beige), aluminum highlites. I've got my 800XL beside my A500 and the 800XL looks so much nicer.

Cool A500 too! Welcome to the world of customised, dark shaded Amigas. If only there were more spare CDTV keyboards out there for us all to use.
