What kind of e-mail addresses do the recent spammers use anyways?

Either that or increase the number of global mods (as they already have massive amounts to do as it is - there's only three of the guys and they do a fantastic job) - approving registrations is the way to go, in my opinion anyway. But then it's totally up to you.

If technically feasible, I think it's a good idea. Just select a whole bunch of existing members as volunteers to review and approve (or not ) new registrations. With enough volunteers the workload and delay for genuine new users should be low. Hell you could even give the volunteers points and make a game out of it.

Or maybe vBulletin can interface with the Mechanical Turk to review registrations.

Alternatively EAB could just be made invite-only.

have you tried writing a whitelist for registration instead of the more usual blacklist, ie most amiga users come from well known countries of origin and was popular and still used in certian countries, use something like mod_geoip in apache to preven say chinese, korean, russian ips from registering or even seeing the site exists. to them if you did this you would literally become the invisable man. doing this would sure cut down the spambots, as they tend to come from well known locations, so easy to write a apache mod to block them.

another layer of security would be to introduce captcha you know the wonky letters image and the user needs to type in the code during the registration process, this defeats the vast majority of spambots from registering in first place. , easy to implament, plugins available for most popular forum backends and content management systems.

I was wondering...

As all the spammers currently use single-letter locations, could you not set up a system that allows them to register, but prevents them from posting?

I.e, they post their spam (and receive no clue that they weren't successful), but it doesn't get to the board itself. I dunno, I'm not well clued up on how board software works. Thing is, if they think they have registered, and think they're posting, so long as there's no human checking (and I doubt there will be), then they could post to their hearts' content and we'd never see it

D.

Joining a yahoo e-group asks you to state a reason why you would like to join and then forwards the email to a moderator. He then decides if you are legit.

i don't think that it would be really on the spot. or fair.
anyway, China is at the 13th place! and notice that at the 2nd place the origin is unknown.

I assume that most of the spambot registrations are scripted, ie they register, receive an e-mail for confirmation, then automgically click the link to activate membership.
I doubt that somebody is doing this manually, considering the thousands of boards which they must be spamming.

So, why not spike the "activate" e-mail:

For example:
Quote:
Click on the link below to cancel your membership application:

eab.abime.net.cancel.link

Or remove the spaces and manually type in the following URL to activate your membership:

eab . abime . net . activate . link
Just a thought, and it would - at least - cut out the scripted bots.

The cancellation link could give users some info as to what to do to re-register, so if someone clicks on it by mistake they can at least understand what has happened.

Regards

Rich

Tell me if it stop spam.
Not yet, but this happy chappie joined on the 24th May, whereas the new user reg was only closed on the 25th May.

Perhaps it is worth looking through any new members from the last week or so also? There could be other "sleeper" spambots.

hay as a side note, do you know we have more than 1000 (one thousand) members with 0 posts and even moderators i don't even have heard of among them???

at least that by reading the list:
http://eab.abime.net/memberlist.php?...=posts&page=51
http://eab.abime.net/memberlist.php?...=posts&page=56

look for petter and pika...

wouldn't be this the chance to some spring cleaning?

[edit] also, there's something that puzzles me on the main page of the board, it is declared :
Quote:
Threads: 27,881, Posts: 326,322, Members: 4,118, Active Members: 1,028
but if you click on the members list button, you see a that the count is at 3637

[edit2]: isn't "Active Members" actually the inactive bit? = 0 posts?
