Amiga Chiptunes...?

Where can I download chiptunes, so far all I seem to be able to find is Mod, XM etc.

I need my chip grunt.

True chiptunes are the sound generated by the audio chip, all of which use machine code to set high and low frequencies, filters, volume etc, by doing so they create unique emulations of actual instruments, i.e - the audio is mostly programmed into the audio hardware - some chiptunes may make use of audio samples.

The Amiga tends to make use of pre-recorded audio samples.

There are many chiptunes that use the mod format.

If you want a format that sounds very chippy and is made for the purpose then look for tunes in AHX. Amp and modland should have plenty of them. Also try this music disk by Yelm, top quality stuff in AHX format:

Yep, the majority of chiptunes are mods. The authors use very short waves and Adsr them with effect commands. If you're dead set on going by non protracker format you can find those too, but I'd rather go by author name :-)

You mean chipmusic. What we call "chiptunes" in Amiga world are those MODs replicating these sounds using really small samples.

The Amiga Has NO sound synthesis chip in it, so you can't have "chipmusic". Some formats however work on the base of a software-based synthesis (AHX, MusicLine), creating waves in real-time or pre-rendering them beforehand, but that's it.

I agree with the wikipedia definition, that, in my view the terms are interchangeable. "Chip music" "Chip tune" They are the same thing for most people these days.

If I hear an Amiga mod that has chip like sounds I call it a chip tune, I tend to refer to the genre in general as chip music.

Both terms lack definition on platforms without a hardware synth, so both would be misnomers and no chipmusic at all would exist on platforms like Amiga and various modern consoles, standard PCs, etc, where the audio hardware just plays samples and any synth sounds you may hear is either emulated in software or emulated manually by the composers (both by using short sampled waveforms and applying various effects). It has come to include the latter, and not just music using the hardware synth chip.

To me, and I am one of the few oldschool Quijotes on this train, it is exactly this way. Specially since in this case, as you can clearly see, someone is confused and has asked for "music created with the Amiga's sound synthesizer", which doesn't exist. In any case the term is a cause of much unnecessary debate, but here there's a clear example where some proper definitions would help. OP: tere's no such thing as "Amiga hardware synth music" because the Amiga has no such thing. If you want "Amiga software synth music", there's plenty f stuff to look for.

http://www.modules.pl/?id=modules - easy way to find some really nice chiptunes ( ahx , but sorting by "genre" is possible as well ). Database has over 7k, so isn't as big as modland's archive, but at least you are able to sort all that stuff ;]
