Not stating a preference (I doubt I can come) but having lived for several years in both cambridge and london I'm really not convinced cambridge is cheaper than london...

And I'm mainly talking about beer. Both places have - mostly - very expensive pubs.

Hmm there's not a LOT of difference between cambridge and london.

Cambridge to london is 40 minutes on the overhead and about £10. HOWEVER, if everyone's coming by train, I doubt there'll be much kit around the place lol!

Parking is a bit of a bugger in both places, though cambridge is better - wins no prizes though! They're cycle-mad up there and the little idiots are everywhere!

I think speaking to SEAL would be a good plan. I mean, its not like there's any rivalry and it sounds like they have their act together.

So yea, I think we should discuss what format its going to take and what would attract people. Because this could easily go from a full-on three-figure gathering with lots of gear, to three people in some pub in london getting very drunk discussing the finer points of how Commodore coulda done things better and what a bad bad man Ali Medhi was... lol!

Just thought I would mention, I know I nice-ish place in Hertford. Its a youth-club really. About double the size of a good-sized living room. No furniture, no bar, there are power points, but we'd need extention cords, but there's an indian restaurant accross the road, a good pub not too far away, plenty (free) parking, not far form the station or the A10 and the nicest part is its £30 to hire for the night... lol!

Ok viddi, thoughts:

The majority have chosen, but then again I don't remember the EAB being a democracy.

FWIW:
-I'd like the meeting to be on my doorstep, of course, but that's not likely to happen.
-I'd like it to be somewhere convenient to travel to; so a place with v.v. local road, rail, airport that doesn't resemble a huge termite mound - I'm guessing I'm not the only one considering lugging some retro-junk along, but not if I have to carry it miles across busy (and frankly embarrassingly bad) UK public transport.
-A nice venue in pleasant surroundings would be good. Preferably with booze & somewhere civilised to sleep - I'm sadly getting too old for crashing in tents, cars, under tables...
-Gotta be CHEEP or it could be a very small meeting.

What would fit the bill..? (can only suggest specifics if it's somewhere I know)
-A big pub with function suite & rooms - there'd be food too.
-One of those conference center-type places from whom a room could be hired - most do beds + food + booze too.
-Town / village hall - amenities would be very much down to local knowledge.
-University campus - Many hire out facilities during holls.
-Small hotel - should have all we need. (think wedding reception)

What would I stay away from..?
-Big conference centers - hellishly expensive.
-Big hotels - In Liverpool there is a big / flash / famous hotel called The Adelphi: My father summed the place up well when my parents stayed there for my graduation. "I've been all over the world to some grim places but this is the WORST hotel I have ever stayed in. I see what you mean by 'scousers'." Oh, yes and they charge a fortune.

I guess I've rambled-on enough.

Before people go off the idea, London can be a cheap place to stay. Easyhotel (like Easyjet, but in a hotel!) costs about £20-25 a night and have 3 or 4 sites in Central London, plus theres loads of B&Bs across town. Even the Travelodge group are cheap if you book early enough, and a group booking at most of the bigger hotel chains would reduce the cost as well.

Also, are there any other groups who would be interested in getting together for a joint meeting? Sort of like a combined RETRO show?

First things first tho, Venue location? Size? Budget? Once you have that nailed, you can start looking at local hotel accommodation.

I live fairly close to London, so access to the city isnt a problem for me and Im more than happy to help out where I can.

I am not sure London has that much to offer me been there a few times and cant stand "hate" the place subway\buss chaos .. I would rather go for Cambridge as i feel the town is more quiet and cheaper "not been there though".
Well i think i will stay home in norway anyways . Uk is ok as long as not London

plus _if_ i could convice the better half to have a load of strangers round, i've got two double rooms and one single room, plus the two sofas downstairs for people to crash in/on the night before... maybe playtest a few games
