Post Hacker

AFAIK Hacker has never been cracked. A few people do possess the original though...

That's quite ironic, Hacker never been hacked.

Wasn't Hacker given away on the cover disk of Zero magazine before the commercial game "ban" came into effect? Or was that Hacker II ? Mmmmm

and I think Hacker one was an old KS1.1 title that would run with only 512K chip ram or even 256k

I think Activision had the copy protection decrypt the binary after it loaded into memory, of course I'm sure Codetapper would know better then I

Well, what about the "bad" copy in TOSEC then?
Might it happen to be a NTSC version for KS 1.1 (NTSC, note there were PAL versions also) and 256 K only?

With this (vague!) theory, this dump might work on a US A1000 with NTSC ICS or OCS chipset
(ICS/OCS depends if A1000 is early or late model)

Zero gave away Hacker 2 on a coverdisk.

Maybe I should have said "properly cracked" or "fixed" or something

Hacker doesn't require Kickstart 1.1, and will happily run with 512K of memory. I just tried it out on my A1000, and it works just fine with either Kickstart 1.1 or 1.2. It does guru using Kickstart 1.3, which is probably why it won't run on my A500, but it might work on an A500 with 1.2. This is one of only a handful of titles that I ever had on real diskettes that doesn't seem to have been cracked and put out in adf format, so I'd be as interested in snagging a cracked copy as anyone if one ever appears.

As some of you should know by now, Hacker has been preserved as CAPS release number 906. I must extend a big thanks to CAPS as I've been looking forward to seeing the Amiga version since I first heard about it years ago.

Using a standard A500 config, the game works well. KS 1.3, 512kb Chip/512kb Slow, 68000, OCS.
I copied the IPF using D-Copy and it resets at track 10, much like the ADF in TOSEC.
I tried on an A1200 config. It sat there when it got to track 10. No resets.
I tried on an A600 config, and it sat on track 10.

On everything other than the A500 config, if you have more than 1 drive enabled, the game will go berzerker.

My conclusion is that Hacker is reliant on machine config, however, it's more reliant on the disk itself. At a guess, if the game is properly cracked, it should work on newer machines with a bit of degrading.

Floppy disk Hacker

Here's a quick analysis of this game:

Boot file is encrypted - this fails on all 68020+ machines

Original requires the disk to be spinning when it reads the copy protection track (10) to work out the ID $17a7d - hence copies will not work. Thanks to IPF for the disk spinning info!

Game has a bug in the memory allocation routine - it puts the memory type in D0 instead of D1. By pure luck (or something) it seems to work on older Amigas but not on newer ones.

The WHDLoad version is underway but there is a bug in the kickstart interface atm which makes it crash. There are 2 of us working on it though!

You need a registered WHDLoad, or else the game starts in "demo" mode: not possible to move the mouse

bye
