I've been giving the Escapists some playtime. Its still in early access and that is with good reason; the game can be completed just fine and the foundation is very stable and complete, but it is lacking some of the more complicated gameplay mechanics that it really needs to have the required variation in possibilities to have more replay value.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/298630/

But with a publisher such as Team 17 behind it, what could possibly go wrong?

What it is: a pixelated humorous game about breaking out of jail; it looks and plays like a NES game

What it has: a rich crafting system of course, and multiple escape routes of varying difficulty
How it plays: like a prison break sim but without the doom & gloom; its not so much about the escaping but rather the planning towards the escape. You do that while just being part of regular prison life, going through your daily routines - or breaking away from it to do some dastardly deed.

Finding the possible ways to escape (which differ per prison) based on the items you can get your hands on is the main challenge and fun factor of the game. Scouting for the right parts, training yourself up for the job, attempting dangerous missions such as stealing items from guards and just trying to hide all your contraband which is easier to obtain than it is to stash away. As an example: you might need timber to be able to create pillars while tunneling out, which might mean you need to get someone fired from the woodworking shop so you can apply for the job yourself. But timber is contraband and you can't just take it out of the shop; you need to hide it somehow (or you can just take the risk and run and hide).

My current verdict: the game is fun and has an addiction factor and will probably still expand a lot in possibilities, but in my opinion the focus is a little bit off right now. It should include more gameplay for the actual escape itself. But also the planning has some major holes; the game has a "friend system" for example where people can like you or dislike you which you can influence in a few ways, but it does not have a way to form a gang just yet and perhaps attempt a group escape.

In other words: right now its Shawshank Redemption, but not Prison Break yet. It is playable but does not cater to the more elaborate needs of a person who wants to setup various prison escape schemes just yet.

Why the hell do they need a publisher in the first place when there's Steam?

So as in "like any escape from prison movie", not Prison Break in specific?

Yeah it looks cute at the start, but ultimately it is quite a boring game. Not worth 15 bucks IMO.

That seems to have become a standard indie game price nowadays :/ Too much for at least half of them.

Yesterday my eye fell on Catacomb Kids (early access):

I'm not buying it in its current state and at the current price but this game gives me a real retro vibe not only because of the graphics but also the gameplay. It looks awesome really. Love how you can make insane combinations of things that no other game really has done before; its genius for example that you can also use potions on enemies.

Looks nice, but have to agree with gimbal, it's not worth 15 bucks.

Yes, it looks really cool. But I agree, bit pricy for not released game yet.

XeoDrifter. This is an extremely cool looking game that is as close to Metroid as you're ever going to get. Its also quite cheap at 10 bucks / euros.

If that is cheap enough depends on how many times you might play it as you can finish it in a couple of hours only. But that is the same for Super Metroid which remains fun to play even if you've finished it numerous times.

Finally bought Shovel Knight and I'm not regretting it. This game is pure nostalgic genius with smooth platforming gameplay and plenty of secrets.

Prison architect alpha 31

I'm posting this one specifically because it is a rather special update; death row has been added and prisoners can now be executed.

Even with PA's rather simplistic cartoony graphics, its still a ghastly experience! Amazing design.

Despite gimby accusing me to not play my games on several occasions I want to recommend two little gems I discovered by the wonder of bundling and/or free promotions here:

Glorkian Warrior: The Trials Of Glork

Take Space Invaders/Galaga add a good dash of Jeff Minter and mix it with some rogue-lite elements. You'll get a surprisingly slick and playable arcade game with a really wonky humour.

Diamond Dan

It's hard to describe this one properly. It's a bit of P.P. Hammer with some Rick Dangerous elements, a dash of upside-down Nebulus and achievements. You have two characters with different abilities to get rid of stones that block your way down to the base of a level and you have to face a number of increasing traps to get there. It has great difficulty curve with unlimited lives to not make you curse too much at the screen.

Oi!

I'm only accusing you of buying -way- more games than you actually can play.
