EAB/Lemon Super League 2013: Round 14 - Lotus Turbo Challenge 2

EAB/Lemon Super League 2013: Round 14 - Lotus Turbo Challenge 2

Starts: 00:01 November 10 Finishes: 23:59 November 30

Rules

Post a picture of your score here with the score written underneath. Enter as often as you like. Only scores achieved during the round's time frame count.

IMPORTANT - You MUST play the WHDLoad version linked to in this thread, and the one in the Zone - as the scoring systems seem to vary amongst different versions, we have supplied the WHDLoad version on a High Density ADF to play in UAE for those who don't use WHDLoad normally, so you can boot it and play it like normal. You need an A1200 setup emulated with a High Density floppy drive and 4MB of Fast RAM.

No cheating of any kind (including score leeching) - this includes save states. No continues/passwords allowed. If you suspect anyone of cheating please let us know in private - anyone found guilty will be banned for the entire season.

Remember, anyone can join in at any time. Have fun and feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Downloads

- High Density ADF (see above, this or the below WHDLoad archive MUST be used. Thanks to Hungry Horace for supplying this)
- WHDLoad-installed

Extras

- Results and standings
- Full rules and FAQ (incorporating the Hall of Fame)
- Lemon thread

Quite a distance from my all-time best of 76 mio (in the halved score mode of the never slaves).

Here's my first score. I'm not sure why it's so low tbh, I thought the majority of points were scored from the time remaining on tracks 6 and 7. I had around 15 seconds on track 6 (the motorway) and 22 on track 7 (the marsh), which can both be bettered but are both ok. I'll have to try and remember what I did to get into the 60m+ range a couple of years back.

In rain stage, it is sufficient to collect 2 of the last 3 turbo pills, however it is mandatory that you enter the last section with 8 or more seconds left.

Urgh... I so love the Lotus games (I have Lotus 1 on the Megadrive), but still hate (H-A-T-E) the fog level - it's the difference between a good run and starting over again...

I made it to the desert stage, but lost alot of time when a car was on the racing line. I deliberately ran wide to overtake but ended up going into multiple sand drifts at the side of the road. Later on I hit too many rocks, but the tumbleweed stretch was fun

Edit: Despite saying "Press 'Help' to save scores" on start-up, I couldn't get it to save scores

To save the score automatically, set the tooltype custom2. I recommend to set custom1 too to save the config with your name and gears setup.

BTW: I still play with automatic gears, manual gears are only needed for 70+ mio scores (if at all).

Still one tip: Most cars oscillate between the borders of the track, try to observe early to which direction they move and chose the gap which seems to be bigger. However, there are also some cars which change direction in the middle of the track, and then there is the problem with the chained cars. It can be even helpful to drive a short distance outside the track to overtake some chained cars, and to jump over logs and stones.

Half of the score is being made with level 6-8, it is e.g. possible to have 40 bonus seconds at the swamp level.

Set the tooltype for which file?

Graham (or whoever can do this), can we please have the scores image added to the first post please? I don't wish to have to jump to Lemon every time I need to see the current top scores

If you are using whdload from the workbench, click once on the Lotus 2 icon, then hold right mouse button and select icons->information. Insert a new line with

custom2=1

and click save.

The ADF has probably a whdload call in the startup-sequence, simply add the text

custom2=1

at the end of the whdload calling line, separated by a space character. (Cannot look at the adf, fs-uae doesnt recognize the image.)

For custom1=1, do the same procedure if you wish.

Thanks for that Harry. The startup-sequence file (in the "S" drawer) on the ADF now looks like this:

Code:
assign env: ram:

;lha x 1:1.lha ram:
;lha x 2:2.lha ram:
;lha x 3:3.lha ram:
;lha x 3:4.lha ram:

cd 1:

whdload slave=lotus2.slave PRELOAD custom2=1
Now all I have to do is get past the desert level...

Don't forget to quit whdload to the cli with the quitkey after playing (default for Lotus2 is HELP) and wait for the floppy to calm down.

Words cannot express how frustrating those last 2 levels are..

Actually to tell the truth I find the whole game frustrating

The fog level is frustrating for me, and the motorway can be a pain if you end up on the wrong side of the motorway on a long left hand turn... all the other levels are quite fun.

So far my best score from the first level alone is 4.8 million (you need something like 10 seconds left on the timer). I think it's possible to get 5 million from it, but only on a perfect run.

The last, rain level is hard but swamp is still very manageable.

When I played this in 4 player mode the other 3 moaned because starting with level 4 or 5, they completed 3 stages before running out of time and then had to wait until I completed the level. That was kind of funny to me.

If you are not aware and find yourself on the outside of a turn in the desert level, thats also not funny, because you will lose not only 2 seconds like per crash but much more.

With a perfect run in the forest level, you may get 19 bonus seconds and a score of 5.24 mio.

I don't know if it's my setup (somehow) or the WHDload slave on the ADF, but I can't get the quitkey to work at all. I tried changing it to other keys and it still fails to work.
It only saves hiscores once and only if no "highs" file is present on the floppy

Some improvement on my score...
