In my opinion, it's a good thing if the IP rights and the OS rights are in one hand.

Like everybody else, I'd like to hear though what he plans to do with this except sitting on them and selling Amiga Forever, which I don't have any interest in.

So, what are his plans for the Amigas future..

Well Steve adds an element of intrigue with his teaser question, what happened with the 8 bit guy and Michael. Anybody know?

It's been answered somewhere in a thread on EAB... something about 8 Bit Guy wanting to acquire licenses to use the ROMs in a project but being refused by Cloanto.

that information by Gorf is incorrect. David did get in-touch with Cloanto and they outright refused the request.

Also worth mentioning, David is now planning using 'Petscii' characters in his kernel. That to me seems like a legal grey area too. I am wondering how Mike/Cloanto will respond to that too.

As far as I understood David, he did not receive an answer from Cloanto - why else would he have tried multiple ways to get in contact?

But I might be wrong here of course and maybe David did get a negative answer from Cloanto in the end...

Still: no answer or refusing the request - both make you wonder why....

Could it be that their deal with or interest in the C64 (mini) products prevents them or would be a conflict of interest in licensing the ROM to the 8 but guy for what could become a competing product.

How can they stop him using PetScii? There are numerous examples of that character set being used in all sorts of retro-styled games (and a few on the Spectrum via UDGs) which, having not been litigated to stop, would negate any trademark or copyright claims.

i never said they could legally, i posed the question because its a bit of a grey area. Maybe Mike can answer that for us

but - we are getting off topic . This is about the Amiga remember?

Steve isn't wrong when he says that Mike Battilana is a poor communicator. This needs to change if he is going have any hope improving the already poor image of Cloanto, even if people's low opinions of the company aren't justified.

A character set can be copyrighted? Is that what this was all about? Mike himself probably doesn't even know the answer, so no wonder he didn't reply.

I guess, Dave asking, is just him being cautious, given the reputation of the scene.

He wanted to use and modify the whole "kernal"

You seem to mix your own bubble (or the "eab bubble") with a general reality. People that are unsatisfied (or have other reasons or problems) are much more loud than happy or at least content people, so the noise that is generated now by few is not proving anything. Most people that create noise now propably never have bought anything from Cloanto and are not potential customers either.
