PPC boards, why?
I wonder if anyone on eab owns a ppc board.
We all have pretty fast Amiga systems thanks to WinUAE. The ones who prefer the real thing, use a real Amiga with 68k cpus but what about PowerPC Amigas? Does anyone have any experience with one? Actually I wonder why would anyone need one. |

There are some advantages for PPC Boards .... most likely AOS 4.0 will work on Blizzard PPC Boards so you don´t need to buy an AmigaOne or Pegasos for using AOS 4.0 Also some games/apps only work with PPC (mainly newer ones of course) and if you´re really into Video editing and such things, it´s WAY faster than a 060 CPU ..... But it´s really only usefull for people that got their Amiga as MAIN SYSTEM and do NOT own a PC/MAC .... not usefull for Retro-People anyway

I have a PPC card in my A4000T. Cyberstorm 233Mhz 604 PPC and 68060. I like the card and am glad I bought it. It is good for MAME, and cool graphic apps like Tornado 3D, Elastic Dreams etc. Here is agood link if you want to see what apps are available now.
http://www.haage-partner.com/ppcworld/index-e.htm The Shark PPC card from Elbox should be a good one to get for Mediator customers once it is available. Of course Amiga OS 4.0 needs a PPC as does MorphOS. |

I have a Cyberstorm 060/604e/150 in my A4000T, which I bought very cheaply secondhand about 3 years ago. As Pyromania has pointed out, it's very slick with graphics applications (especially for image processing) and emulators like MAME, IFusion and Frodo. You can also use it to play MP3s, VCDs (and DVDs) and other multimedia stuff which need a bit of grunt, although with movies I'd rather play them on a dedicated player than any computer. MP3 encoding is much nicer than on 060.
Truth be told, I've gotten my money's worth with purchasing the board cheaply secondhand. However, I wouldn't recommend anyone buying an Amiga 603/604 PPC board at a brand new price unless Hyperion release a native version of Amiga OS. Without a native PPC version of Amiga OS, the 603/604 boards have been quite limited and developers have had little incentive. Mind you, if Hyperion deliver the goods, I probably won't need too much convincing to upgrade to G3/G4 8-) |

@Shadowen: Quite. I would not recommend a phase5/DCE 603/604-based PPC card as a long-term upgrade. Hard to come by, overpriced, outdated. (Unless the price is right... i.e. bargain-bin cheap. Only buy 2nd hand, definitely).
Come on, Elbox! Release the Shark PPC! PCI G3/G4 is the way! Support dudes with Mediators, already. |
