IDEFIX IDE buffer just stopped working

Had this IDEFIX IDE buffer for a while now.

Recently it has just stopped working all together. Doesnt boot anything attached to it etc and the 3 chips get extremely hot as soon as its powered up!

Looks ok, cant see any damage. Any idea why this has happened?

I cant understand why a simple device like this would just stop working one day.

Maybe one of the chips was marginal to begin with and over the years it's deteriorated through use until it's burnt a trace or short circuited itself.

Or the PAL's programming has changed for whatever reason.

Or there could have been a short circuit or a voltage surge (static zap)..
