matt,
Excellent job on these reviews! Games that I think should be added to your list: 1) an early graphical RPG, like Ultima III 2) text adventures...Zork I is always a classic Again, excellent work! - Alex |

Well, how about the original platformer? Super Mario Bros. Or, if we're going to keep it Amiga-related, then Dune II is the start of the Real-time strategy craze, that had its golden age in the mid to late 90's.

Nice suggestions. I've been thinking about doing an early RPG, too. Lots of good games out there. I could do Temple of Apshai--a great early CRPG that doesn't get much attention these days (overshadowed by Ultima and Wizardry). I'm very tempted to go way back to PLATO. Lots of good CRPGs and space games on PLATO that will blow your mind--seems incredible that they were doing that stuff back in the 70s.
I did think about Zork but not sure how it'd work in terms of video. I've been wanting to cover Deja Vu "MacVenture" from ICOM Simulations, but that's a Mac game. I have the Mac emulator setup for it, but I'll be damned if I can find the Deja Vu disk images. I like the idea of doing SMB so I could bring in another platform (NES). Wow, you guys have given me a lot to think about!!! Dune II is definitely in the future. We dedicate a chapter to it in Vintage Games as well. |

You can get the sequel on the file server or the tracker
I'm not sure you have to win the tournaments... It's easier that way for sure, but you should be able to win the game without them (was/am rubbish at them too ) |

haha I think i got the other knight down only ONCE and that was back when i played this on my c64 with a joystick, so we are talking a looong time ago, i think it was something about hitting the cross on the shield and pushing the button at the right time, as i said it was back when LOL.
U can easy win the game just take all the land, I could hint the easy way to do this, but that will ruin your game m8 rest is just filler but it's nice filler |

I think you just need to aim at the center of the shield. The better your Jousting skill means the further off the dead center you can be and still win (might also affect how much it bounces around, I don't remember). Of course your opponents jousting skill comes into play in that equation as well.
It's odd that no one has done an in-depth analysis of the gameplay for DotC. It's not like it's not a well known and popular game. I've looked and all I ever see are general reviews. |

It would be good if there was a hack that let you simply play the joust game again and again.

Awesome review! Subscribed
One suggestion - you might want to crop the Amiga footage videos... remove the big borders. But very nice, looking forward to more reviews! |

The jousting is easier if you choose Wolfric. Basically, just aim for the shield or the helmet; the better jousters have lances that don't bounce up and down so much, so it's easier to aim. I'm not a joust champion or anything, but I did get to where I could consistently win with Wolfric the Wild.

To be honest, I have never finished DOTC on Amiga IIRC. But on speccy we competed with other guys and tried to finish the game as fast as possible. I dont remember exactly, but the best time was something around 1,30, maybe less. There was some easy way how to win the game.

Wow something and someone actually worth watching on You tube - no offense to the very few decent efforts out there of course
A both interesting and intelligently spoken look back at a classic, though i would have also touched on troop purchasing as well - not that it was anything too in depth mind Defender of the crown wowed pretty much anyone back in it's day when they went to their local computer shop, but it was probably the C64 and St versions that played the better game after their revision Good stuff Iv'e still yet to see a review of Solo Flight from anyone though and that's a shame given how great it is |

I love Defender of the Crown
I've managed to finished all these versions numerous times: ... Defender of the Crown (C64) ... Defender of the Crown (Amiga - OCS) ... Defender of the Crown (Amiga - CDTV) ... Defender of the Crown II (Amiga - CD32/CDTV) |
