Weird A590 behaviour

Hi all,

I know, it's been a LOOOOONG time since I posted on here, but thought maybe someones expertese may help me out.

I've got two Commodore A590 hard drive units, one has 4.5 GB SCSI drive, 2MB RAM and is of the supposed newer type (green power LED and yellow HDD activity LED) - this works fine.
My other A590 is of the older type (red power led and green hdd activiy led) with an old 20MB drive and 2MB RAM - and it's got a weird problem.

If I leave all four DIP switches set to off, my Amiga boots up to the Kickstart screen (as expected, because auto-boot is off) - I can boot a disk, and the hard drive is available (once BindDrivers has done it's stuff in S:Startup-Sequence)
If I turn ON the autoboot DIP switch (switch 1) - my Amiga will lockup & guru just before the Kickstart screen (so, black, dark grey, light grey, white, guru!)
This behaviour is the same on numerous A500s and A500+s - the only time I don't get the guru is if I either turn off auto-boot or plug the A590 into my old Kickstart 1.2 based A500 (which didn't have autoboot anyway)

Any ideas?
Has the boot ROM got corrupted?

The drive iteslf checks out all OK (which is a miracle for it's age)

Any ideas appreciated.

I also asked this over on AmiBay, turns out the problem is the ROMs.
The faulty unit has 6.6 ROMs that look like EPROMs or EEPROMs, think they have maybe 'lost' their contents somehow.
