Mr. Beanbag

Perhaps this is a bit premature, but there hasn't been any news about this game on the website since last year.

For those who don't know about Mr. Beanbag, it's a console-style platformer with huge levels and lots of fun, colourful graphics. The gameplay was fast and smooth, and the music was great. There are a couple of demos available to download on the website, one is of the first level and the other is a Halloween special. The game was previewed and reviewed in Retro Gamer magazine as well.

I'm not sure if anyone has contacted Tricky about it (I think she used to come on this forum), but it would be a real shame if this became another Amiga Game That Wasn't.

I think you might want to give Tricky at least until the end of the year before mentioning it in a thread like this. It's a hobby project, so I'm sure real life has forced her to put it on the back-burner, at least for now.

I certainly hope it comes out as well, and I'll gladly buy it. I don't see the harm in mentioning it here, it was mainly to generate interest and maybe find out if anyone knows more than we can tell from the website, not to declare the game dead or anything, and I know that the guys who run GTW have a good record of getting in touch with developers and getting the games released.

Thanks

I have got another review in the pipeline actually, but you'll have to wait and see what that is

Most of my writing time is now taken up by my MySpace football diary now though. Though I'll certainly do reviews as well where possible (and when a game actually comes out)

Anyway, that's too far off-topic...

Maybe Tricky read your scathing Desert Racing of BarDos review and is too scared to release her game!

You're best bet is probably over at Amiga.org. AFAIK it's the only Ami forum that Tricky has ever posted to about the game. This is the last thread they had there on Mr Beanbag:

http://www.amiga.org/modules/newbb/v...=37022&forum=6

When I was researching the game for HOL, I couldn't find anything anywhere on the net (including the game website) to suggest what Tricky's and Alex's full identities or contact details were. It's probably intentional and they don't want to be hassled about the game's progress in email. Try posting again/PM'ing Tricky over at Amiga.org, or making an entry in the game website guestbook.

Maybe someone could persuade her to keep us updated on EAB?

With the lame pick-up lines that Ironclaw uses on the female newbies, not a chance!

Seriously, though, I've just had another look in the secret HOL vault and found that she's listed an email addy on her personal website (see bottom). The only thing is that she hasn't updated her website since 2004 from the looks of it, so I'm not sure it's current. Anyway, there's another method of contact for Rebel-CD32 or someone else to follow up on.

Great, but I am fairly curious to find out how Retro Gamer reviewed it over a year ago (if not longer?), giving it a glowing review and 88% if it's still not even finished...

The demo I played certainly doesn't deserve 88%.

I totally agree with that. In the demo's state it'd be more like 50% but it would be rather unfair to judge it on that.

(Not that it stopped RG, clearly...)

My last post seemed a little damning now I read it back!

It wasn't meant to seem that way!

Hopefully they'll allow the player to see more when it jumps because that was one of the big flaws with the game.

I just don't agree with upping a game's score just because it's the only new game coming out for the amiga.

Marco, you can download demos of the game from the website - http://www.glastonbridge.co.uk/mrbeanbag/index.php

I hope that jumping/camera thing gets fixed, or at least have an option to turn it on and off in the options screen, a lot of people complained about that originally, (although it was much worse in the very first demo, it is better in later demos, but not gone completely).

Technically, the game is pretty impressive. It scrolls extremely smoothly for something with full screen, multi-layered parallax. The graphics are cute and colourful, the music is funky, and the whole game with all the levels that are planned all fits on a single floppy disk. The game is classic, console style fun, and I'm all for that.

I did think it was pretty suss for Retro Gamer to review an incomplete game, but hopefully they'll have a review of the full game when it's released.

Another thing that really interests me is Tricky (the coder of Mr. Beanbag) said she might release a game maker/editor for other people to make their own platform games using her awesome game engine (which is waaaaaaaaaaay faster than Backbone). I think she deserves all the support and encouragement we can give her.
