So, does this mean we should have some kinds of cooling? Are those chips ok to run at those temperatures??

I often wondered if there should be some kind of cooling on a stock Amiga. Jeff, do you have any other Amigas?

These are really cool

49c should be OK for electronics. Heat is the enemy of longevity though so perhaps it's not a bad idea to put on a few small chip heatsinks

Without a fan or some other active cooling, how much does a small heat sink really help?

A fair bit I believe. Before the Pentium came along x86 CPU's only used a heatsink (no fan).

It increases the surface area of the hot object so yes it will make a difference. Active cooling will obviously make more difference.

I've got little heatsinks on my A500 chipset and it does keep the chips cooler to the touch. I can't qualify exactly how much the difference is. I will happily accept a thermal imaging camera should you wish to donate one for testing purposes

The die will be hotter than the surface temperature of the chip due to the plastic not being a particularly good thermal conductor. Interestingly, the shielding on the 128 doubled as a heat sink (visible 2 minutes into the video): [ Show youtube player ]
