CrossDos 7.04 Long File Names not working

I'm having trouble with 720K DOS formatted floppies not showing the files with long file names.

Amiga 500+
Kickstart 2.04
1MB stock RAM
Workbench 2.1 (Colanto disk bought from AmigaKit)
CrossDOS 7.04 Gold (1998 Edition by CONSULTRON).

Acording to wikipedia:

CrossDOS 7 was the last version released and included support for long filenames and other features not available in the bundled version.

However, when insering a DOS 720K formated disk, workbench reads the disk ok, shows up as PC0:, however the file names are shortened to 8.3 filenames.

I've had a look in Workbench2.1:System/CrossDOS to see if there is any setting in there for long file names, but it just comes up with something to do with ASCII.

However, I did have trouble installing CrossDOS. I went through the instalation program and it was asking me to swap disks between Workbench2.1 and CrossDOS. It goes smoothly until after copying mfm.device. It then asks for the CrossDOS disk. However, when the CrossDOS disk is inserted, it is not reconised for some reason.

I had to revert to a manual install by copying the required files which are the following:

L:CrossDOSFileSytem
DEVS:mfm.device
C:Mount
SYS:system/Format
SYS:system/DiskCopy
SYS:system/CrossDOS

Upon running Dr_CrossDOS, it report's all OK.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

If it was formatted on a PC, you might succeed by formatting it on the Amiga..? As in, the file format on the disk was a pre-5.0 (or whichever version it was) MS-DOS version.

Why not Fat95? I never bothered with commercial CrossDos.

Easiest solution is to put your files into archives then extract them on the Amiga..... filenames and file attributes all preserved correctly.

Aza1810, since you mean MS-DOS in your OP, maybe call it that? There are plenty of other DOSes out there, as this article shows: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOS

Otherwise, we won't quite know what you're referring to.

He specifically says it's a 720K DOS formatted disk. Leaves very little doubt as to what version of DOS it would be from.

The Atari ST also used exactly the same MS-DOS file format and structure, not to mention disk capacity.

I had this working 20 years ago.

I cant remember exactly how I did it. But I am guessing it has to be formatted to use VFAT, which is the one from Windows 95 to have long file name support. Later Windows versions use FAT32, which I guess is not compatible with old CrossDos 7.x.

If not, you can wait for AmigaOS 3.1.4 that has a working CrossDos version that supports FAT32 long filenames and even more than that, has an asynchronous design which plays nicely with multitasking.

crossdos 7.04 support long file names and is working perfect here
nothing related to format the disk in pc or in the Amiga
you have to have crossdosfilesystem v7 on L dir and pc0 on devs/dos drivers
that's all

surely you are using an old file manager which don't support showing more than 30 characters
try a different filemanager as dopus 5 or dopus 4.16 on aminet

Original post states that CrossDOSFileSystem is in L dir and PC0 is in devs/dos drivers. Not sure why it's not working. I'm going to try Fat95 as an alternative

Yeah, have been using Fat95 for years (decades?) now, always had long filename support, support for large disks, and was free. Haven't used CrossDOS itself since the early '00s at the latest.
