Crackdown on Fairlight
The Register reports a crack-down on a UK warez group called Fairlight.
Just out of curiosity, are there any ties left with the FLT of yore? Last edited by RCK; 23 April 2004 at 16:54. Reason: LOL - for once ***** was used in a legitimate way! |

Like I said in news forums: the board is now fully indexable by search engine:
http://eab.abime.net/archive/index.php For the moment two words are banned: w-a-r-e-z and r-o-m-s I'll have a look to find how to replace them by alternate name instead of * |

ouch, that is bad.
I'll desactivate the banned words until I found one acceptable solution. |

Echelon has an exclamation after it because The Reg are jokingly trying to suggest that the international, government monitoring network and the release group are one and the same thing.
Kalisto, Echelon and ProjectX are console release groups. Echelon started out releasing games for the DC. Kalisto took over the reins in that dept. after Echelon came to an agreement with Sega to stop releasing their games. ProjectX came onto the scene more recently. Echelon later decided to focus their attention on more modern console platforms, as did Kalisto. |

Damn, I've mixed up Kalisto and Echelon, sorry. It was Kalisto who came to an agreement with Sega. See this Slashdot article for further info.
Edit: actually, come to think of it, I'm pretty sure the story was nonsense anyway. Kalisto are notorious for lying/joking in their nfos. I don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility for a company to 'think outside the box' like this to tackle piracy, but not in this case. Last edited by dreamkatcha; 23 April 2004 at 17:11. |

Judging from the comments (as the article is no longer readable) it seems to be a bit of a hoax indeed.
Still, nice story. |

No probs. They really knew how to kick up a fuss, eh! Must have thought the scene needed livening up a bit. There is another rumour that Kalisto and Echelon are the same thing. As the story goes, they were having a hard time cracking a particular game (I've never paid much attention to console games so can't be more specific) so they made up this whole story about the offer from Sega as a cover for delaying the release. After they'd bought themselves some extra time they switched names and released the game under the pseudonym Echelon.
There's a hell of a lot of group member cross-overs so it's difficult to keep track of who's who at the best of times. The authorities think they've killed off one group by prosecuting a few members, but then the remnants just move onto work with one of their affiliates. It's all swings and roundabouts. Another version of events is that someone outside of the group released a fake nfo containing the Sega story, Kalisto picked up on it and decided to humour them and play along for a laugh. |

It`s not like you need much skill to release console games either as the vast majority have no protection other than that provided by the console. Any old chump with a mate at EB and a fast connection can release games. The authorities don`t really stand a chance, one gets caught and someone else steps up.
