Backslide to Arcanum - Cosmic Orbs - Tech details

Hi there,

I recently wrote up some technical details about the demo I coded for Revision 2024.

I don't think many people will see it otherwise, so I'm sharing it here where some of you might find it interesting:
https://www.cosmicorbs.com/blog/backslide

The demo and video links can be found here:
https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=96604

Happy to answer any questions here.

Little OT but one of my curiosities since am not a coder: how complicated would be to have a Mario Kart mode 7 interactive landscape on OCS/ECS? (not necessarily 1x1, i would say 4x4 is optimal, one playfield or max 4 bitplanes) and then in the other playfield all prescaled bobs for plants, obstacles, etc.

Thanks for the writeup! This was my favourite demo from Revision this year (against some strong competition) - it's always nice to see the thinking behind these kinds of productions.

It depends how you do it.

For speed reasons, you could use a 128x256 (assuming you use 16 bits per pixel colour) source image for the "track" but that's going to look a bit naff. It does fit nicely in a word indexed address register offset. Ie "move X(a1),Y(a0)

Then for something more useful for a game, you get into the realms of using a tile map, which slows things down immensely, due to needing to read your pixel from the tile before writing to the screen (chunky or copper screen)

Generic question unrelated to the code side : could you please share the original protracker material for this prod, and any other forthcoming ? I _do_ hope there's more to come !

You'd have to ask Magnar. I don't think he would object.

Excellent demo, saw it on Hoffmans stream last night, can't believe it only came 3rd.

Any other year and it was a 1st l
Place finisher for sure.
