atlon 64 3800+ 2.4 ghz vs intel q6600 4x2.4ghz

which improvement can i expect with winuae if i buy a new intel q6600 (4x2,4ghz) vs my old athlon 64 3800 + (2,4ghz) ?
I ask because winuae don't use multi core or just for some parts.
filters more fast, workbench more fast etc... ???

Hmmm

if i remember reading what Toni put last time, as most of the UAE core is not threaded, the point of multi-cores is lost, so its better to have a faster single core than a bunch of slower cores linked together.

for instance i notice a UAE performance hit when running it on my Turion 64x2 3200(1.6ghz actual) comparied to my Barton 3200 (2.2ghz actual) and my 3700+ x64 Sandiago single core

Personally it matter not if a chip is multi core or not, there needs to be a better way to reference a chip speed.... i am thinking 3 numbers..

multi, single, FPO, this way i can pick up a box and go AHA! yes thats what i need a single core that can achieve such and such score.... or AHA!!! that multi-core speed is perfect for my threaded problems!

OR

man the FPO (Floating Point Operations) is so crap on that CPU, it couldn't run gloom in 4x4!!!!

it would be nice to have a standard, but that would mean chip manufactures would have to agree... and well that is not going to happen.

Do not compare MHz values ("Megahertz war" ended when P4 was discontinued), Intel Core2 architecture is much faster than "old" AMD processors.

@Toni

so for emulation in general, whats better a multi-core or single core?

Multi-core because there is no new single-cores that use latest technology

For example, playstation 2 emulator called PCSX2 use dualcore and compared to single core cpu, its noticeably faster.

At the risk of bringing up a semi-contentious subject:
If it's 'doze you're using I'd say keep clear of Vista for the time-being & thoroughly nLite your XP.

These steps are the reason I'm still happily using my old Athlon XP system & my 'uber PC' languishes mostly unused.
I honestly can't see any 'real world' difference in performance between the two boxes - admittedly helped by my seeing no point in buying any of the latest games.
None of the many emulators I use (inc WinUAE) max-out my old system.

Of course WinUAE can max-out any system if using fastest possible settings. (CPU at 100%/number of cores = "max out" as far as I know)

It is extremely easy to see difference, try any game that is not locked to vsync (most 2D Amiga games are) and needs complex calculations.

and btw, OS is mostly irrelevant when using "2D" emulators as long as display driver is not stupid.

"2D" emulators really like fast CPU (with as big caches as possible) and large RAM bandwidth. (including VRAM) Thats it.

(btw, tiny warning, this is getting close to something I don't want to see)

Just making the point that much can be achieved by improving efficiency - benchmarks are of course a different kettle of fish.
'Max-out' may have been a poor choice of words - in practice I mean that I don't need to make any compromises on my preferred settings for the sake of hardware limitations.

Apologies if somehow I've caused offense.
(not my intention)
