Amiga HD?
Hi all,
I have an A1200, 10MB RAM etc, My HD is a little low on space and is quite temperamental to say the least! I was wondering if such a device exists to allow you to connect your Amiga to your PC to make it use the PC as a hard drive. I want to use Bloodwych’s great Classic WB, the ADV version but don’t really want to shell out loads of cash for an Amiga harddrive. Last edited by BobRedthorp; 06 August 2003 at 00:48. |

Not sure there is other then using a network via ethernet and Samba for the sharing.
Your best and cheapest option maybe to look for an old notebook/laptop HD, something around the 4GB range or so. You can still get new ones as well, I think the smaller 10~20GB drives are still pretty cheap as well. |

Are you running the cable outside of the case or using something like a Squirrel SCSI interface ?!?
My original A500 had an external interface that connected to the expansion port and I also ran another external HD outside of this via a cable. It was unsightly of course but it worked |

Most likely your external HD is SCSI, fitting an IDE harddrive is really easy, just buy a laptop HD and a short cable for it. open your 1200, inside there should be a metal tray thing that the drive sits in, screw the drive to the tray with the pin end pointing to the left, plug the cable into the drive, and the motherboard, put the tray back in it's slots, close the 1200 and your done
then fire up hdtoolbox, partition and format the new drive... you could even make a bootable partition on the new drive, copy the stuff off the old old, disconnect it and get some more desk space your other option is a bigger SCSI drive, but that's not very easy to find or very cheap, and a lot more hassle to install... |

Talking out form my arse here but...
Wouldn't it be possible for an Overdrive-type HD to be upgraded? I suppose those have a normal SCSI or IDE HD in them, which one would be able to replace with a beefier one... Or am I completely wrong? BTW that pic is of an A500 drive, that surely is not in your Amiga, I bet you have an Overdrive. And about HDs, you are better getting a 2.5" 4GB drive instead of messing with a 3.5" one. You would need a superslim drive (I have a seagate) so it fits. But it still isn't natural and I recommend using a 2.5" inch one instead. Any short 2.5" IDE cable will do, make sure it's 44 pin |

What's the make and model of this expansion unit?
Once we know this we can refer to this fabulous site for more info and we could then figure out what you can use. Also, you can use the info that Severin provided as well and you should be able to use both of them |

I'm not entirely sure as the sticker on the underside of the HD has been removed, its second hand, and I can’t be bothered opening it, however, I quite fancy the idea of installing an internal HD, using a brand spanking new one!
I've decided il just shell out the cash. |

How about this expansion case, I've never seen one of these for the A1200 as Akira said it looks like an expansion for the A500 model.
So if you can open up the cover on this unit, there maybe some info inside that says the make/model of the expansion unit. |

Sorry, I see what your asking now.
No, the expansion case I've got is similar to this one, this image is just one I found on the net, mine is slightly smaller in size (width). But im gonna put an internal one, as this one does'nt work that well anymore. |

Yeah, but one thing i've got to ask, prob sound daft, but, when I get hold of a small enough drive, and connect it to my Amiga, how does the drive get power?
Or does the type of drive I should be going for not require an external power source? |

This is why you need the special 44 pin cable, the extra 4 pins are for the power and the ground lines

Yep, and all you need is a standard 2.5" notebook/laptop hard drive. There are a number of them out there from manufacturers like Hitachi(IBM), Toshiba, Seagate, Fujitsu etc...

Supposedly none. Open up your Amiga and see if it has a metal craddle in it. If it does, you are set, otherwise you will have to buy an HD craddle.

You maybe able to use zip ties if need be, perhaps double-sided tape would work as well
