A7220u & Ide Hd
Hi. Was wondering if anybody has any experience with this question I have. I have an ACARD 7220U SCSI bridge. I'm waiting for the cf interface to arrive so I thought I would try an IDE HD on it. I've searched a few forums, but none of them talk about a physical IDE HD. I have a GVP HD/8+ with 4.5 rom's. All the documents talk about ZIP drives, CF interfaces, CD's & DVD drives, but no HD's. In fear of blowing something up I thought I'd ask first.

Don't worry mate. ACard was designed for IDE HD's and that's why it has the design ready to be mounted on the back of an IDE HD or CD-ROM. AFAIK ACards are older than CF adapters CFs are simply compatible and they are used frequently due to less heat, power conservation and physical dimensions.
You can use an real IDE HD just fine with the ACard |

You'll be pleased to know that the Acard 7220U SCSI bridge is suitable for use with any IDE device, including hard drives. Just make sure that the hard drive is configured as Master or only drive.

That's great, thanks. The only doc's that came with the card was the jumper settings (and the card is new). I'll have time tomorrow to play with this and get things going with it.
Cheers :P |

I gave this a go with a 20GB IDE HD. After several attempts, I finally got the HD partitioned under PFS3. 3 partitions; 1=1GB, 2=9GB, and 3=9GB. The partitions format and are usable. Booting the A500 is touch and go tho. Sometimes it boots, other times it will just hang on the boot. resetting the system doesn't always work, either. Is it because the ROM in the GVP is v4.5? The A7220 is set for ID 0 with the IDE set to Master. The CF adapter is only 4GB, but hasn't arrived. I am doing something incorrect? If you need more info, please let me know, I made notes as I went.

If you have a multimeter handy check your +5 volt rail, also your +12.
The HDD may also have issues, be a bit finnicky. |

Everything looks fine, 5v, etc. I tried another IDE HDD and it, too, is doing the same thing as the other IDE. I remove the 7220U and install the old SCSI drive and everything goes back to normal. I've matched the 7220U scsi id to that of the old scsi hdd. Power on the terminator and have it enabled, as well. There's an external cd rom attached as well. I hope this helps with a few ideas. I'm at a loss other than ROM upgrade. I have the hex file, burner, erasure (if I need it), but no 27256 (or a source for the eprom). I'm hoping that it's the v4.5 ROM that's the problem.

It could be a possible spin up delay problem, I am just guessing here without the setup in front of me.
Firmware shouldn't be that hard to find. |

I was thinking about the the spin up as well. Trouble shooting SCSI devices is usually left to LUN/ID, Termination, and/or firmware. I've never worked with this type of scsi host before, so this GVP/Amiga stuff is really interesting. I'm sure, once the 4GB Flash and adaptor arrives, things will look a little more clearer. I'm putting in a v4.15 ROM and that will eliminate the older firmware stability issue.
Does the 7220U require powered termination? Currently is set to powered and active/enabled termination. It seems that regardless of the setting, I'm getting the same results. Thanks for the help. |
