Another Newbie
Hello Everyone,
Just joined up as I have just got my hands on an old A500 at the weekend. I got it for free as someone had kindly left in all boxed up (in original boxes - with warranty cards/manuals/leads/2xmice at the local tip - I couldnt bare to see it thrown away. Unfortunately it didnt come with any disks. Anyway I have also just bought a A600 with a load of games on ebay for £12. Ive got loads of parts that look like they may be useful (PCMCIA-CF/ CF-IDE adapters, loads of CF cards, couple of 2.5" HDD's. I had a A500+ about 10 years ago with a viper accelerator in it (530CD rings a bell?) and it was a quick machine - bought from First Computers in Leeds. So when the 600 turns up on Thursday hopefully I can get cracking (and reading) on getting it set-up with a CF/HDD installed. Dan |

IIRC I really needed and wanted a car at the time, a guy I knew had a Fiat Cinquecento he was selling and also liked amigas - so it was A500 & £££ for the car.

Welcome to EAB.
An A600 for £12 and a free A500 isn't bad going at all. I'm sure you can get yourself a nice little setup with all that stuff |

Hi and thanks again.
Just a correction to something I said above, it was a Viper 520CD I had, not a 530. Dan |

Welcome to EAB danhans
Wish I had your luck, the wife wouldn't complain at me spending £12 for an A600 but anything more I would have to convince her it was for a good cause Have fun here at EAB, and let's hope your miggies work just fine, although I suspect some attention will be needed with some of the mobo caps, so do a little opening up to check, that's if they haven't already been replaced |

I never check my caps. Will my amigas die at some stage because of caps? I dont even know what they do.

I just get rubbish together and go to the local council tip - if you ask nicely they always say yes - and its the best form of recycling IMO.
I got a BRAND NEW!! Sega Saturn a couple of months back, absolutely mint condition - not a mark on it - boxed - all manuals and leads joypads etc. I also got an apple II years and years ago. I have like a retro allowance - buy bits and fix and sell them, if I make on them I can buy something better. Looking at some of this amiga stuff though, id need a big allowance lol Thanks DemonHellraiser - are we talking about the big electrolytics at the back of the mobo? Dan |

@gordonbennett
If they leak they'll damage the mobo. They are just like batteries, when they are exhausted, they leak. You usually can't tell 'cause they leak from underneath where you can't see, but my advice would be to replace them. There are already some really good threads about this here on EAB, telling you of the type to replace them with. Have a search 'n' I'm sure you'll find them, try 'leaky caps' for starters |

Has your miggie still got the warranty seals intact?

No(not incuding the cd32). I got 3 amigas and I have opened them all up to install/replace Hard drives. I also have a sx1. They all looked fine when opened, the only problem i notice, is my sx1 never doesnt remember the the time. It just reverts to whatever I set it, next time I boot.

Thanks for the headsup guys, Ill check the caps when I get the 600 delivered and get myself down to Farnell.
I was reading one of the other threads regarding flashing your own kickstart ROM. Ive got a programmer (Genius 540), so might look into that too. The 500 ive got definately hasnt had anything done and the seals were broken when I got it, the casing behind the FDD has been melted by the looks of it. |

Goy my 600 last friday, it is in pretty good nick.
Got an old laptop HDD and prepped it with with USB2 - IDE and WinUAE, installed WB2.1 and the cf/fat32 drivers. Working great. The only thing is the mouse has had it so ive ordered a couple of PIC16F628's to try and make a PS/2-AMIGA adapters as ive loads of old MS mice lying around. Just a shame it has 1mb RAM as I want to try WHDload, will have to keep an eye out for a better amiga or an upgrade. |
