Crackling sounds :(

Hi guys.

So, I've always had a bit of an issue with sound buffering on some more demanding games (ei: Aladdin, Alien Breed 3D etc). But usually putting the sound buffering up to 3 or 4 does the trick as long as I don't play around with filters too much. I recently found a fun site http://classicwb.abime.net/ where I can get a super configured Workbench and it works great. Bit of crackling happened when playing mods, but again, sound buffering to 4 made it okay again. I don't like using it beyond that as I get a delay in audio.

I couldn't try the iGames, their not there, but I still have my vast collection and proceeded to install Colonization. Works fine but I noticed the resolution was a bit off, so I tweaked it in Filters. There was always a bit of crackling happening anyway but If I get all the pixels perfect in the Filters Menu and everything look amazing, but sound crackling is pretty bad.

Not the same problem as me but same crackling it seems and the guy mentions turning to an older version of winUAE.

Basically my question is, is this necessary, or what would my other options be? Currently I am using the latest version of winUAE

4 is pretty low, normally you need a low latency sound card to go substantially below ~ 50ms latency.

Setting buffering to lower than your sound card can handle is what causes the crackling.

There are relatively low-cost USB sound cards that do 8ms or so latency. I have an Edirol UA-1EX which is perfect, according to me.

It's a long shot but you can try selecting the name of your card instead of DirectSound. But basically you're asking too much of your hardware, I think. We won't know until you list your PC specs.

Crackling sound when enabling filters or other extra stuff: your system may be too slow or your sound card is not that good. Run in windowed mode and check CPU% value in bottom of window. It should never go over 100%.

Note that buffering values changed some versions ago, 5-6 is about the same as old default. Less than 4 requires fast pc, good sound card with good drivers. (Designed for low latency)

Thanks, I actually found the answer. I didn't know the 'Double Line' option was causing so many problems (and it makes no difference to have it on :s)

I actually run winUAE from a USB. made all the paths look for files locally (in the same folder as the EXE) so I just pop it into any windows based computer and runs without any configuring. The odd thing about the new version is it wants to "correct" the path once it starts but if I save the config before then and it finds everything without problems.
