A600 + Squirrel + External cdrom = HELP!

Hi,

I am a reasonable veteran of workbench, some knowledge but obviously not enough.
I have trauled through the forums looking for answers (and have found quite a few very helpfull ones!) for a solution to my problem but to no avail.
My problem is this:
I have an A600, a Squirrel interface, an external cdrom.
I wish to connect it all together and be able to use cd's.
Fairly simple right?
Ok, I have installed IDEfix 97 (not sure whether too or not but I did it anyhow), AMIcdrom and AMIcdfs, and also the squirrel software.
The cd0: icon in the system drawer when asked for info is reporting that it is set to squirrel.device. ( I believe thats how it should be?)
The SCSI ID of the drive is set to 5
There is no cd or floppy icon on the desktop for the rom, When I double click the cd0: icon (in the system drawer) it says "device already mounted".
When I use the SCSI mounter thingie, it scans loads of devices but doesnt seem to see my rom drive on any interfaces.
The cdrom has an active terminator on the back, (maybe it needs a passive one?) I have tried scanning for it with it on and off with no success.
Could it be the mig doesn't like the drive???
Apparently the drive worked fine on the Mac it came from.
Anyhow now im kinda stuck and not sure where to go next?
Any guru advice would be greatly received.

Many thanks.

Rave

Try a different cd-drive, it should come up with the mounter tool if the squirrel likes it . Also if you have any other devices in the scsi-chain remove them and ONLY try with the cd-drive first.

You dont need IDEfix for the squirrel as its scsi. Try removing IDEfix from the startup sequence if you made an entry there.

When you used the scsi mounter software did you select the squirrel.device then carry out the search

Its a long time since i used my squirrel, but if the miggy is saying CD0 is mounted then id say its found something, there may be life in that drive yet.

Hope this helps

Hey dambuster,

I dont think I made an entry in the startup? would this have been on the install???
I did select squirrel in scsi mounter and search but didnt seem to get anything?
There is no CD0: icon either
I have just purchased a scsi drive off lopos which worked with his squirrel but it still doesnt seem to work
Im probably doing something silly, or have a duff squirrel?
Im not sure whether I should format and reinstall or not??

Any help appreciated.

The CD0: should be in sys:dev/DOSdrivers drawer.

Ok, I have tried the squirrel and drive on my mate's A1200 and its works perfectly!
Im starting to think this may be an OS 3.1 - A600 thing?
When we installed the squirrel on the A1200 we used the advanced install and left everything default and it worked a charm?
Im thinking now about doing an A600 internal IDE cdrom project like zetro's.
Hopefully IDEFIX97 will be easier to set up than a squirrel.
Amigakit here I come!

i do remember my a600 requiring a little more force to get the squirrel in. kept me swearing for days wondering why the bloody thing wouldnt work

The PCMCIA port seems damn fragile anyway. Broke it while fitting a PCMCIA angle adaptor (don't worry Keropi, i have a *working* mobo now ).

Is it is classic squirrel or surf squirrel?

I remember reading in the surf squirrel handbook that it's only compatible with the a1200.

This might explain why it's okay on your friends a1200 if so?

Hi i am A friend of Rave's
It works fine on my 1200 but on his 600 it just seems to not see that there is a cd rom drive at the other end. I know its not his PCMCIA port becuase he has used a network card in it aswell and that works fine.

Silly question, but you know that if you have a terminator on the CD drive, it needs to be the last item on the SCSI chain, right? You've not got (say) a hard drive with a terminator and then the CD drive have you?

The Squirrel works just fine with my A600 and 1200, so I can safely say it should be ok.

I would say if any.... an A600 really needs a lump of fast ram

save the pcmcia for fast ram (sram) addon!!!

If there is a jumper like "Power over Power Connector to SCSI" set it. Helped me alot.

ok so i just cut my PCMCIA slot open with a hacksaw and foun that some pins are bent!
I straigtened them, and tried again, still no worky.
i happened to have another A600 lying around so i tried the squirrel in this one too, again no worky.
However it does work on my 1200? wierd huh!!!
Anyhow upon closer inspection i have found that my 1200 port also has bent pins which im gonna have to straighten, its all that stupid squirrels fault, i watched the pins as i plugged it in in it seems to want to bend them!

@ Willow - its a classic squirrel btw, although it has no label on it.
Is it possible i have a fake thats why i have problems?

poo!!!

I had similar problem with a Surf Squirrel and a SCSI CD-ROM. Tried everything but in the end I could only get mine working by selecting/adding CD32 support when running the installation program. Does the Classic Squirrel have the same choices?

My CD0 device is using the "cd.device" driver which means it's controlled by the CD32 emulator, sure there'll be a problem with this that I can't see yet but it's working fine for now so it'll do. The standard device driver on mine should normally be "squirrelscsi.device".

Still though, I'm pretty sure my drive showed up in the Squirrel Mounter program before I hacked my filesystem to pieces but I could be wrong, I can't even remember half the stuff I tried to get the damn thing working.

Looks like im just unlucky, the cd32 emulator refuses to install, saying it needs at least a 68020 to run!!!

Sorry to revive this thread guys,

However on the weekend I wanted to connect my working CDROM Squirrel combo from my A1200 to my A600 to copy over CWB & guess what,

I have exactly the same issues as my friend Rave.
SCSI Mounter scans too quickly (compared to my A1200) & finds nothing.
I've confirmed my PCMCIA Port is fully working & all pins intact.
My A600 is 2MB Chip & KS2.05 37500 (large hd support)

Anyone any ideas please. Was a solution or answer found for this problem

Cheers all

TC
