Groo the Wanderer - Some sprites I made for an imaginary sidescroller

I love the Groo the Wanderer comics and some time ago I tried my hand at drawing some sprites of the main characters of the comic, based on Sergio Aragones' original art. Groo never got a proper videogame and it there was one, I would imagine it to be like Sturmtruppen in style and gameplay (health items would be jars of cheese dip, obviously!), and Groo would run through the levels "doing what Groo does best", which is slicing enemies to bits, of course. Every then and now, The Sage would appear and offer his advice or something.

Maybe I set the pixel count a little bit too low since important features like Groo's big nose are not visible at all, but I would like to see a lot of the gameworld around me so smaller sprites work better in this regard. I really don't like the way Groo's sword overlaps his face when he runs and swings it... This could use some improvement!

I love those sprites. See - this is what screams "Fun!" to me way more than any of the photorealistic games they produce nowadays.

I don't know that character but I can recognize proper pixel-art when I see it - doing those is a skill which is unfortunately slowly disappearing. I can image a great looking game based on this.

Thanks! I think Haeger the Horrible would be a better comparison for a style of game Groo could appear in. It also has very similar graphics. Maybe I'll draw some enemies for Groo to slash...

Nice work, it got nice simple Lupo Albero style. I know it is still early, I wonder how it could look.

Some nice stuff from you (as usual) .

I happen to also like the Groo comics. Like Herbie or Captain Marvel (Shazam), they make a nice and funny diversion between issues of more heavy and story-driven comics.

Really nice sprites Cherno. You are talented !
PS: The way you have pixelised Chakaal, I find her is more sexy than the original drawing
