Amiga 1200 Mouse Problems

Good Evening,

Further problems persist with the Amiga 1200 that I have been modding to internally mount a gotek drive in (http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=82256).

Now the mouse will not work, all I get is erratic movement as shown in the video at the link (http://vid1181.photobucket.com/album...403_163936.mp4). In the video I am moving the mouse quite a bit but as you can see it does not move much. The mouse buttons still work. I have also tested a second mouse that I know is working and that exhibits the same behaviour.

Could anyone tell me what that possible causes be and also a way to fix the problem?

Thanks.

CIA problem? Have you recapped the motherboard?

Try portswit.lha on Aminet. It allows you to plug your mouse into the joystick port.
Worth a try, maybe your mouse is faulty!

I've not recapped the motherboard would you recommend that as a next step?

Also, what is a CIA problem, if there is one and how is that diagnosed/repaired?

I've tried two mice, both work on my Amiga 500.

Yes you probably have to recap your unit if it hasn't yet, it's the first thing to suspect.

If after that it still doesn't work, maybe your CIA chip is fucked.

I'll get some capacitors ordered online and recap it. If the CIA chip is fucked, is it repairable?

I have neer seen caps causing the mouse problem (not electrolitic ones) but hey, it is remotely possible if Paula legs are covered with leak from caps, simple recap will not cure this problem. For mouse movement is responsible Paula not CIA.

If you need a repair drop me PM .

The CIA doesn't read mouse movement.

U34 (74SL166) encodes the movement to send to U4 (Lisa) which actually contains the mouse registers.

I did a bit research on my lunch break. And found this on lemonamiga http://www.lemonamiga.com/forum/view...791ae893723558.

Could this be a possible avenue of investigation?

Wouldn't hurt to check and it wouldn't take long.
Have you ever removed or inserted the mouse while the Amiga is powered up?

@kratam

I would check the input cleaning of E363 and E364, its quite likely a dry solder joint - run a little bit of solder and flux and it should be good, however if you need to - for replacements you will need 470pF

I would also take the opportunity to check C313 and C314 to see if they are pulling the voltage down properly, again quiet likely a dry solder joint, so a little reflow is a good idea, however if need be - .047uF is the replacement value for these.

It seems, like with the C64 before, the chip in charge of reading analog inputs is again the one in charge of sound. Funny that. I learned a new thing today

Analogue is rarely ever used on the Amiga, so there's not much talk about that. The Amiga mouse is not analogue. :-)
