Simplified thread: Best A500+ web browser?
Edit: Solved: http://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=...6&postcount=27
Hi all, there are other threads about this but they're either outdated or descended into debate or only demo versions. Attempting to get a simplified opinion from you fine folks: Q1: What is the simplest, cleanest, most compatible, non-demo (full) web browser that will work on A-500 Plus? Q2: Please provide download link to the full version Edit: Must work on vanilla A500+ with 1MB, no accelerator. Answers on a postcard t... oh wait! I've got the Internet! Gogogo! AWeb also has a 68000 version.
I don't know how it performs and its other requirements, though. |

I used to run ALynx on my A500. It's a text based browser. That was probably 20 years ago!

A text based browser is probably your best bet on a 500.
Even with a 040 accelerator iBrowse and Aweb struggle with most modern web sites. Not surprising really when some web pages are 6mb plus in size, there's far too much bloat on the web these days! |

Rubbish. That doesn't stop all the scripts and other crap, the pages still won't render properly, disabling image loading does NOT make iBrowse a text browser. Before you go round threads looking for things to diss, get your facts right, I'm not a spotty face teenager that doesn't know what I'm talking about.
That aside, he can use what he wishes, although I do think he will get frustrated at iBrowse before long. |

I appreciate your POVs. I actually only want it:
1) To just show it can be done (pref with images just to be cool) 2) To pull files of Aminet |

There is a couple of ways to speed things up and make it a little more bearable. One is, as has already been suggested to use a text browser. Another is to set up a forwarding proxy on your PC and have the Amiga get its web pages from that, I use this method myself and it is quite effective.
Set up the proxy to remove ads and unwanted scripts as it forwards the web pages, that helps a lot with browsing on the Amiga. |

There used to be proxy sites that would do a mobile screen format, and strip out all the crap. I'll check my old windows mobile PDA to see if the bookmark still works.
*edit* It was skweezer, sadly defunct, but this page lists others: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skweezer |

If you just want to use Aminet, use an FTP client.
It's a shame the ADT service no longer seems to work, it was great for quickly search and downloading from Aminet. |

I second that. FTP is much more effective than any classic Amiga browser when you want to use Aminet. Even with a Blizzard 1260, 128 MB ram and a fast CF-drive, browsing the web is a nightmare, let alone when you plan to use an A500(+) with 1 MB.
So, if you want to prove it can be done on an unexpanded A500(+), well, yes, it can be done. But don't expect it to be useful. |
