Turrican CD32 Anthology Remaster (Extensive CD32 pad support)

Latest version is ready for beta download: https://mega.nz/#!luoW0BDK!1Cefdmxsv...atty_GojvKVsos

Hi all,

I've zoned an experimental of a Turrican CD32 standalone, with blue button to jump! Using CD32Load, Wepl's latest slave and some hacks of my own.

Unfortunately
- Grenades and energy waves (yellow and green now respectively) seem to trigger twice for some reason? I'm not sure if this is related to CD32Load or something else. If anyone has a quick fix for this I'd love to hear it!
- It isn't extensively tested, there could be parts later in the game where my changes break things.

Eeehh.. so it seems CD32Load keyboard->joypad support doesn't function at all on a real CD32, whereas on WinUAE it kind of works (except for that double trigger issue).

Edit: To be clear I mean this game only!

Doesn't the CDTV version have all the moves mapped to two buttons

Kind of. You can't jump from a button on stock CDTV pad (you have to press UP) so it's a little more difficult on a gamepad. I managed to get Jump on blue but getting grenades and energy waves going again now that I'm using Blue for Jump is proving a little painful.

I've done a second upload (not tested on real console yet), this uses a hacked version of CD32Load to map jump to forward, so the traditional fire buttons will still work (red for guns, blue for energy wave, red+blue for grenade)

No, this is not correct, it does work, I have plenty of CD32Load games with keys mapped to joypad that work on my CD32. But I think it depends on the game/slave.

JOTD will have to help you out with that though. Amigajay might know a few tricks too, he's done plenty of adaptations using CD32Load.

The buttons work with v2 but they doesn't match the set WinUAE buttons for CD32 pad. Are you sure you mapped them to the correct buttons (e.g. jump is on fast forward)?

arg: me is stupid. You already wrote that. But the jump button handling on fast forward is far from optimal. Maybe Stingy knows a trick to fix the buttons problem.

@Akira Oops, I meant this game specifically. I know it works fine for most games on real hardware but it doesn't seem to work well with this specific game.

@Retro-Nerd Actually I like having jump on Fast Forward as it makes it easier to shoot + jump simultaneously (Turrican's one of those games where as soon as you release the jump button it begins to fall again). So you can use your right index finger to jump and your thumb to shoot

V3 is up. Blue OR Forward can be used to jump (user preference), green shoots energy waves and yellow shoots grenades.

Not tested on real console just yet, seems solid under emulation.

Edit: Hmm.. well, you can't convert to energy ball from the joypad alone any more (though you can shoot energy waves while ducking, which previously wasn't possible while you still had energy balls left on any version of the game, I think). I'll look at making it so energy ball is on a different button. Mines still work (RED+DOWN), though I could look at putting them on a separate button as well.

Well, jump, energy lines and grenades works fine now in emulation. Damn, we need WHDLoad patches too. Ask a few people ages ago, but nobody seemed interested.

Cheers for the test

V4 is up. Energy ball is back in = trigger with Reverse button.

Reverse is now technically a shortcut for down+space so you can activate energy ball from standing pose (if you don't have any left, Reverse just crouches).

Yep, works great. A good mapping for the CD32 pad layout.

Great to hear, thanks for the test

What's left then? I'll take a look at Pause = Play for V5 and maybe some quit function (it'd have to be a button combination I guess, Forward+Reverse is traditional but I don't think would work so well here, since both buttons are used for regular gameplay actions).

A pause button would be great. Quit? You mean quit to the title screen/menu? Yes, would be nice to have that feature too.

V5 is up. This should be final unless there are any further breaking issues?

Complete controls list:

Shoot: Red (Hold for beam)
Mine: Red+Down
Jump: Blue or Forward
Energy Wave: Green
Grenade: Yellow
Ball: Reverse
Pause: Play (Red to unpause)
Quit to menu: Forward+Reverse+Green+Yellow

Great stuff I'll need to give it a thorough test on a real CD32 (in particular I'm worried about the jetpack levels), and then maybe I could see if I can find the time to do a similar job for Turrican 2 and 3.

Was thinking I might put blue button back the way it was (so blue+down for wheel, blue+red for grenade, blue alone for energy waves) just so we don't lose compatibility with Mega Drive and other two button pads.. leave it so forward and up can be used to jump.

Working great with Amiberry on my Raspberry Pie 3 with a PS3 Controller. Though part of me always wants to push UP to jump. Great work earok
