I recommend SongPlayer but it doesn't matter much which player you'll use, since all of them (iirc) uses mpega.library to decode the mp3 file.
Just make sure that you will use the integer and NOT the FPU version of the library because it's actually slower.
I suppose that you have some fast-ram installed, right? If you don't forget about the whole thing.

To play MP3s on my A500 (020), I use DiamondGUI with mpega.library and convert to 16bit AIFF. Then I play the AIFF with SongPlayer and AHI calibrated to 14bit. It sounds great with no skipping. I just don't try to do too much else while it's playing. The AIFF file gets huge though. If I want a smaller file, I then convert down to 8bit IFF.

The other thing I do if I'm just checking an MP3 for the first time is play it (with DiamondGUI/mpega) with buffering - so that it calculates first, then plays without skipping. To buffer 60 seconds of music takes my A500 about 1 1/2 minutes though.

I saw a hack on aminet, for use of ordinary 4mb 72pin SIMMs as GVP ones! Doesn't look very hard to do, really worth a try

Thanks for the link! I was thinking about doing that but I'm worried that I will burn something along the way

What's the benefit of using an FPU version anyway? More accurate or something?

I think FPU comes into play when decoding music files. I played mp3's under Song Player and was using the ASp ZX Spectrum at the same go. Pretty bearable. In my opinion though, 060 is the bear minimum for mp3 playback, PPC recommended for multitasking.

Regards,

Yes, more accurate but slower.

I'm playing MP3's 192kbs on a CD32 with only 2meg of RAM
with Hippoplayer + AHI Plugin Paula in Hi-Fi 14bits strereo++ accurate and it's not really bad

That's right that's not WinAmp on PC but it's a solution to play MP3's

So an A1200 can play MP3 with a medium quality

But probably you could'nt do anything else while playing MP3 if you just have 2MB of ChipMEM
