Smile Exile - One of the best arcade adventures ever.

This is one of my all-time favourite games. Exile was created by Peter Irvin and Jeremy Smith . I initially played the Acorn Electron version back in 1988 before it's joyful reappearance a few years later in 1991 on the Amiga 500. It was the first game of it's type to employ fairly a complex real-time physics in an Arcade Adventure (Gravity, projectile speed, wind-resistance, etc.) and had some of the most fiendish puzzles you could ever encounter. If my A500 still worked today, I'd still be playing it today. Awesome, awesome game.

Exile, great idea, cool look, atmosphere, music etc... but almost too in-depth and without enough direction to keep me interested i'm afraid!

I do love the game to bits, and i'd really like to give the AGA version a go (if it were WHDloaded i probably would) , but i've always found myself stumped very quickly as to what i'm actually meant to be achieving!

Yeah, it was a bit of a mind-bender. I have my reasons for loving it even more though. One of my proudest achievements was to finish that game, even wrote a guide to the most difficult parts (I saw no reason to ruin the whole game by giving a walkthrough.)

Never gotten into Exile either. Sounds like an interesting game so I thought : Let's look for the manual on HOL. There is one, but again it's only the first page as jpg with the wrong pdf extension
Can someone confirm that this manual : http://hol.abime.net/2890/manual is broken?

Yeah, the link's broken. Although, I think I may start looking for it too. The BBC manual was the most awesome, but the Amiga one's were good too.

You know - I haven't played it for such a long time, I think I've forgotten

I think the aim was to escape the planet, rescue your friends and retrieve the ship's engine from a complete madman.

If you read the review given to it by Gary Penn of Amiga Power, you might get a clearer understanding of what there is to love.

Me? I liked to soar through the air, dodge bullets (Which were sometimes my own.) and the wonderful physics engine made the experience that more believable. The game was also, in my mind, a challenge worth taking on. I relished the complexity of the puzzles and the sense of achievement felt when they were finally conquered - it gets you thinking outside of the box. Your reactions are tested and so is your mind. It's a very complete and rather challenging game - it took me 6 months to get my head around it and finish. So, in my view, they just don't make games like that any more*.

I believe someone is in the process of remaking it too, which is heartening.

Of course it's 'broken' when the filetype doesn't match the extension At least one of the HOL mods should change the extension to 'jpg'
Is your manual different to the one Retro linked here? If so : Yes I would be interested

Shame on you lot! Exile is pure enjoyment and immerses you like a sponge in water. (I actually didn't notice this thread before now, I've posted in other such threads though.)

I discovered it on Amiga, but I will complete my Acorn collection with an Electron ASAP, so I can try it out... it actually looks awesome!

Exile should be played with a keyboard to enjoy it to the fullest (and to get past some of the trickier puzzles!) Just like Gravity-Force by Kingsoft - another superstar game in my book as far as gameplay is concerned - same sense of exploration and pure enjoyment of moving about

To this day it seems to inspire coders to make remakes, like the one linked from gamedev.net!

One? There were two. Nemmelheim, or something or another.

Also, I found Exile completely impossible to play with the joystick. It was keyboard all the way, man. Like you, I feel this game has never received the attention it truly deserved, it's up the with the very best.

Yes Exile is one of those games that stands out quite a bit for being different and actually rather great.

I guess it's not for everybody though as it's hard to know exactly where or what you should be doing - part of it's charm of course

One of the first games to use physics as a basis and fun could be had alone just messing

Quite a lonely experience on Amiga(in a good way like Metroid for Snes or Damocles) and quite spooky i must say even though i must have been already in my twenties when i played it

All versions were good i think in there own way and i wouldn't be at all suprised if a lot of folk here rate the BBC version as best.ST version felt slightly more warmer than the Amiga version i thought due to having a border effect but that's just a preference thing for me - some of the isolated atmosphere is lost because of it

You also couldn't die as such(enegy drains to the point that you teleport) , as well you could teleport where you had just been were you to mark a point.Death therefor was only a real pain if you failed to mark a point before your enegy drained.Something like this anyhow but it all remained fairly frustration free if you used the system well enough

It really is rather good in a stand out way like Sentinel say or Elite and i encourage people to give it a try
