Trying to extract/add files to HDF.

Hi, long time Amiga lover, first time poster. So I downloaded an HDF hard drive for my MiSTer it is preconfigured but is missing some games. I am trying to use Total Commander with the plugin but when attempting to open the hdf it just says error?

Am I even using the right software to add to HDF format, is it even possible?

Thanks

Hi there ryesher,

Welcome to EAB

It might be due to how the .HDF has been fomatted / partitioned and maybe Total Commander doesn't recognise this.

Best bet is to do via an emulator like WinUAE

I don't know if there's a plugin for Total Commander that supports this.

One way to transfer files to and from your HDF is to run an Amiga emulator like WinUAE or FS-UAE. Then configure it to emulate an A1200, add your HDF as hardfile and a directory on your PC for transferring files (device name and label set to PC0: ). Next start the emulator and from within Workbench transfer you files to and from PC0: harddrive. You could even download Directory Opus 4.12 adf and mount this in DF0:, then it starts directly in something similar to Total Commander. You just need to type the device name's your self in the location textboxes, where it usually says something like DF0: or RAM:. I typically have DH0: in the left side and PC0: in the right side, then I can mark and copy files.

It's the most compatible way of transferring files to and from HDF I know of.

With this plugin you can extract/view ADF, DMS, ADZ, HDF, HDZ, DMP file types for Amiga Emulators (WinUAE, U*AE). You can also create/modify ADF files. If you are an old Amiga user who have installed WinUAE or other Amiga emulator then this plugin is for you. Source available.
...but as mentioned, it may not be compatible with all formats i.e OFS / FFS / SFS / PFS3.

Thanks all, I had tried the WinUAE but I can never seem to get it working despite following guides. I don't know if the kickstart roms I have aren't any good or what it is. I'll have another attempt.

Total commander plugin only supports OFS/FFS. It probably also only supports reading from hardfiles, not writing.

Right, it isn't.
Just plain OFS/FFS non RDB HDFs.

Another thing, if HDF contains files with Amiga only "illegal" characters it can't be opened with this plugin, all you'll get is "Error in packed file".
So, easy as it might be, I don't recommend using this plugin.

Yup, I'd always update .HDFs via WinUAE
