Your Idea of a "Perfect" Game

The Thread " Where games are going ? " just made me think of this new thread.
How should new games look like?
What genres better fit mothern games?
(p.ex: should they be a mix of 3D FPS and RPG?
Should they explore more complex universes and timelines?
(Imagine a plot where a city as been destroyed and find it being rebuilt as game time goes by, it would be a nice feature imho)

GTA3+ style freeroaming, but with either

1) Frontier style open-ended gameplay/mission and countless worlds

2) zombie apocalypse, 28-days-later-style, where the effect on the city (or whereever) depends on what you can achieve.

both must be available for PSP as i cant be bothered buying any new consoles

The perfect game for me would be Virtual Reality with Sandra Bullock.

1)playability

interface should be easy, versatile, immediate and not built around the eye candies that do not add anything to the game experience;
game dynamics should not overbear the user: this one articulates in a fit, streamlined and mostly unencumbering ruleset if a ruleset is in the game (FPS, RPG, strategy) and a not overbearing, tedious and repeatitive sidequesting (or sideway'ing).
Goals should be clear enough even if not obvious but most of all should not distract me from the main thing: entertainment.

2)identification and immersion >

if i want to play a car game i do not want the game address me only like i was a 15 years old idiot who consider cool slang, hip hop music and betting on the results without any chance to skip it. (if you are a 15 years old, of course all the 3 conditions just typed should be in place to make sound realistic my assumption. yet you are probably idiot nevertheless, but that's not your fault.)

i consider instead a pros cool acting and (thanks heaven!) a well scripted dialogue (Mass Effect)
a good story, i.e. it has a start, a middle and an end, and it is well recounted.
(i don't even ask for the greatest story in the world, actually i would prefer it is not: i don't like to play a fated characted that has sword shards planted in the torso or has been swapped in the crib with the son of Baal or... wathever! how childish is that delirium of omnipotence!)

also, divided equally among point 2 and point 5 (south of here) is a coherent design, of which the graphic aspect is the least important one (and in fact goes down to point 5)

3)originality >

that comes hust at the third place only! you know what originality is without me sneeking to a definition i've copyed from someone else.
(an original game to me: Rayman Ravid Rabbits; not too much original nor too much trite.)

if these 3 points are satisfied, then the game it's fun already! but let's keep on:

4)great user friendly technology >

you are in the game after not too many minutes after launching it because of its streamlined engine! (Assassin's Creed);
there are no bugs! Oh joy!
the graphic is great and it has a feeling of novelty.

5)nice classy touches >

sound and music, an amazing beautifully rendered ambientation: and not in the graphic departement, but in the richness of detail, in the smart organization of what makes unique that unique ambient. (again both Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect both are great in this aspect)

6)the game can be ended even without professional skills >

i don't need to be distracted any more than this from real life and i prefer not to cheat.

end

uhm... the last game to have all of that, chronologically, is probably Wiz 'n' Liz.

The perfect game for me? A game that was created by people that had fun making it and put their entire soul into it.

Elite/frontier type game in which you can actually leave your ship and visit starports and cities including RPG elements but without spoiling the core of the game that is space travel and everything that made elite great back in the days while trying to avoid the spreadsheet feeling I've experienced in Eve-online when playing as a lone cowboy(yes, I know that game's quality is all about politics, mass organisation and pvp-battle).

Sounds a bit like Freelancer, except Freelancer "side missions" were boring, always the same stuff, and Freelancer 2 (or expansion) was promised but never released.

I agree with you marco NWN2 story was really childish, although i liked the part where you could buy upgrades to rebuilt the keep, it brought something new for a change.

there was something like that in Baldur's Gate 2, when you win a strongold based on your class and then you buy new rooms... it was the peak of the game (if you played it as an evil sorcerer, which, lo! i did ).
but i agree, shaping something in a RPG it's something you don't see often

Anyone played The Nomad Soul? This was a game that had both a great story aswell as a unique gameplay. It mixed genres and created a lively world you could interact with. Although it is not 'perfect' that would be the idea from which my 'perfect' game would be derived from

A few things I enjoy in games:

1. Being able to blow up your own HQ (eg. Hunter)
2. Being able to turn bad and kill your own guys (eg. shoot the instructor in Call of Duty)
3. Multiple ways to solve a problem. eg. If you need a key to open a door but do not have any, you can blow the door up if you have enough ammo (eg. Alien Breed)
4. Open-ended gameplay (eg. Grand Theft Auto)
5. Being able to interact and destroy everything (no game that I know of, but imagine being able to go into every building in GTA, plant C4 in the basement and permanently blow up any building you feel like).

Hmm, looking at the list there appears to be a bit of a common theme there! But it comes down to freedom and it's nice to be able to let your frustration out on pixels in a game!
