Cool blackcornflake’s Pretty Good at Amiga Arcade Games Quiz

OK. Spotting a gap in the EAB market for a quiz not involving naming a game via a teeny portion of a screen grab, or one based around knowledge of adventure games (with ‘elves’, ‘dragons’, ‘horses’ and other make-believe creatures in them), I hereby give you, without procrastination, cunctation or, for that matter, much consideration, a little quiz about Amiga arcade games. Here be no RPGs. All that is required is for you to be not bad at some games I happen to have played recently.

If you find any of the questions too obscure, just fire up the relevant game and play to find the answer. It’ll only take five minutes. If you are good enough, muwahahaha. I’ve even given you multiple choice. Here are 5 fabulous things…

1. Slamtilt
Ace of Space table. Alien Attack multiball mode. What is the value of the Super Jackpot, available after killing all the aliens?

a) 25 million
b) 50 million
c) 30 million

2. Sensible Golf
What does the commentator shout when a hole is completed 3 shots under par? (Discounting a hole-in-one on a Par 4). Sequence: -1= ‘Birdie!’, -2= ‘Eagle!!’, -3=…

a) ‘Albatross!!!’
b) ‘At last!!!’
c) Nothing but polite applause from the crowd

3. Kingpin
What is the name given to the 10th consecutive strike in a game?

a) Turkey
b) 10-bagger
c) No special name: Strike

4. Guardian
Level 100 is completed.* What happens?

a) Nice outro and credits
b) Start Level 1 again
c) Start Level 101, obviously

5. Deluxe Pacman**
What happens when a screen is cleared of pills, then the power pills are consumed?

a) Jump to bonus screen
b) Extra life awarded
c) Nothing special

*OK, this will take slightly more than five minutes.

Ok so I'm not sure about this, but I'm going to try anyway.

1. 50 million seems sensible. Sounds special and I got 25 mill before on other tables.

2. Sensible software haven't always been that serious, just look at the credits of cannon fodder. I'm going to guess on C

3. B? turkey is 3 strikes consecutive.

4. have no idea what game this is, but 100 levels sound like a darn lot. Guess it's level 1. Most games with 100 levels don't have a NICE outro.

5. I've tried different pacman versions without anything but a pain in the ass to have to get the power pills. I'm guessing a C.

Akira! Bzzzzz! No points!

@Drake: You are correct with two of your answers. But as all five answers were guesses, I'm not going to tell you which ones you got right. The point of this thing is to play the games.

1. A (Never played Slamtilt )
2. B (If my memory is right)
3. B (Going with Drake's answer, never played this one too much)
4. B (Never played this one too, would kill to play it)
5. A (Never managed to do that, but it's the kind of thing to expect from the creator of Deluxe Galaga )

@Shatterhand: You are also correct on 2 out of 5.

@Akira: That's weird. I was sure you had underlined all 3 answers for Q4, but now only one is underlined. Is that your final answer?

I will give everyone who wants a try a bit more time, then I will reveal the truth.

I could play the games and find out. but there are a couple of things which prevent me.

1. I'd have to find all games but Slam tilt
2. I'm not quite sure how you'd squeeze 100 levels into 5 minutes as per note so it'd take much longer
3. I suck at games generally.

@Drake: OK, I take your answers. But you still only got 2 right.

Don't worry. To 'suck' at a game is a relative thing. For example, even peeps who think they are great at Sensi suck at it in comparison to me.

Oh, yeah. See my disclaimer:

More like a day. I think everyone is going to have to guess that one...

@CPC464: 3 out of 5.

That is correct, but it looked like a typo and I'm pretty sure it was (the underlined choice began with the closing [/U] tag, rather than opening. I edited and removed that one slash character and the message looked normal.

If I was wrong, I apologize and will revert it back like it was.

OK. Here are the answers, with bonus free blackcornflake comments.

1. Slamtilt
Ace of Space table. Alien Attack multiball mode. What is the value of the Super Jackpot, available after killing all the aliens?

c) 30 million

My favourite Slamtilt table is Mean Machines. Great fun, as it is busy as hell and just throws points at you.

2. Sensible Golf
What does the commentator shout when a hole is completed 3 shots under par? (Discounting a hole-in-one on a Par 4). Sequence: -1= ‘Birdie!’, -2= ‘Eagle!!’, -3=…

c) Nothing but polite applause from the crowd

I don’t know why they didn’t include a sample for an albatross, as there are samples for eagle, birdie, par, bogey, double bogey, triple bogey, +4 and up, out of bounds and water hazard. There isn’t one for a hole-in-one, either.

3. Kingpin
What is the name given to the 10th consecutive strike in a game?

b) 10-bagger

The one weak link in my otherwise sneakproof quiz, this could be looked up as a piece of real 10-pin bowling terminology. Bizarre naming convention, btw. They start off all different, (i.e. strike, double, turkey), then sort of run out of names halfway along, and just stick a number in front of ‘bagger’. Crazee!

4. Guardian
Level 100 is completed. What happens?

c) Start Level 101, obviously

Akira - you are the only geezer to get this right! Lucky guess!

Yep, you battle through 100 levels of a really demanding game, and what do you get? Level 101. Hey ho. But I still love the game.

5. Deluxe Pacman
What happens when a screen is cleared of pills, then the power pills are consumed?

a) Jump to bonus screen

Bit of a gamble, this strategy. Best left to a level that suits it. You could lose a life attempting it, but 50,000 points (exactly the amount required to gain an extra life) are awarded for completing the resulting bonus screen. A little bit of luck helps – the bonus screen is randomly picked; some are easy, some are nasty.

Final Table of Pretty Good Players/Guessers

1. CPC464: 3/5 - King of the Jungle
=2. Drake1009: 2/5 - King of the Hill
=2. Shatterhand: 2/5 - King of the Castle
4. Akira: 1/5 - King of the Swingers

Everybody else: 0/5 - King Prawns

@blackcornflake

Did u ever managed to make a hole-in-one in sensi golf???

I never did it, and I played it alot..

Talking about Sensible golf, anyone ever played the PC version?

That shit got be a joke of Sensible Software. I bet they released the PC version and laughed at PC users, it sux BAD. SWOS was already bad enough, but Sensi Golf is just pure crap. The ball physicis is HORRIBLE.

I did! I think there was a hole in the Tokyo course where you could score a hole in one.

BTW I love the Neogeo Pocket's neo Turf masters. It's very similar to Sensi Golf in some aspects!

PC SWOS is ok.. It's a PC, what else do ya expect?

Yeah, it's cool, but the NeoGeo version is even better, IMHO.

I'm disappointed to play a tournament and not get one...

Absolutely, Shatterhand. I could not agree more. The thing looks similar, but... ugh. It plays terribly. It matters not whether you use a nine iron or a three wood - the ball acts in EXACTLY THE SAME WAY. Ridiculous. And the computer players can hit it further than you possibly can. Pah!

I also dislike PC Sensi. It is a pale imitation of the GREAT Amiga version.
