[AmigaCD] The Strangers - .HDF & .LHA (for real Amiga users)

Heya guys,

I'm running out of games that I want to add to my WinUAE collection... Suggestions are always welcome but please post in this thread: Request for any gems

Anyway, there's a load of "AmigaCD" games that I haven't added yet as they can be a bit fiddly...

Tonight I installed "The Strangers" to .HDF but it still required the CD-ROM to be mounted.

...so much like onEscapee, I found a way to get around this with a little bit of hacking etc.

As per usual, thought I'd share this .HDF with emulator users. Virtually no Workbench files are used (beside "Assign" / "Execute" / "LoadWB" / "SetPatch") so it should be safe to upload...

Grab the .HDF from the EAB File Server under the directory "~Uploads/DamienD/HDFs"

No problem guys

I guess I should also make an .LHA file for real Amiga users if people want?

One thing though, I couldn't get an assign to work inside the game's icon scripts for some reason. The exact same assign works fine if I put it in the hard drives S/Startup-Sequence though...

Very weird

For real Amiga users; the "StrangersAGA.lha" file has been created and uploaded to the EAB File Server under the directory "~Uploads/DamienD/LHAs"

Just extract to the root of your hard drive. It requires roughly 55MB of space.

Only small thing is you need to set an assign before starting the game:

Code:
Assign STRANGERS: SYS:StrangersAGA/CD-ROM
Either put this in your "S/Startup-Sequence" or "S/User-Startup" file...

Bah, figured out what the issue was with having the above assign inside the game's icons / scripts... No need to add manually anymore.

All you need to do now is extract the archive to the root of hard drive and you're good to go

Old archive removed and the new one uploaded to the EAB File Server under the directory "~Uploads/DamienD/LHAs"

Hmmm, made one last final change to the assigns...

Now you can extract the archive contents anywhere on your hard drive and it will run perfectly

Old archive removed and the final new one uploaded to the EAB File Server under the directory "~Uploads/DamienD/LHAs"

Having these HDF games available in the EAB server is fantastic and you are doing a wonderful job.

Which made me think that it might be good to devote a small, simple web page to these packages as well as listing them on various EAB discussions. And maybe provide a small amount of amiga novice instructions on how to use them.

Now I'm certainly not an Amiga novice and also not afraid of visiting the ftp server so this is not something that i need. And if you're uninterested I don't really mind.

But if you thought you would like a small page to devote to at least some of these then I would totally be willing to give you a small page on our server. Even if it did not contain the actual HDF's but rather an official information page with the name and location within EAB's server if legal concerns are a thing you may have.

I'm thinking of all those more casual Amiga users who might not be familiar with EAB. AS there packages do seem to be very newbie-friendly. Which for a computer most famous for its gaming such as our beloved Amiga is a good thing indeed.

Give it some thought, and keep up the good work.
These packages are excellent.

Heya Anakirob,

Many thanks for your kind offer

Yeah, it's a good idea.

I mean, most of the stuff I do can be found on the EAB File Server under the directory "~Uploads/DamienD/". The main things being:

... HD INSTALL --> ADFs
... HDFs
... LHAs

Most are obvious, but there are times that you'll probably need to check the corresponding threads first to get an idea of the required specs or WinUAE configuration to be used.

The webpage could have the 3 above main sections, then pages for each file which then has:

a) Description.
c) Screenshots.
b) Required specs.
c) WinUAE configuration.
d) Thread link.
e) Download link.
f) etc.

Hi DamienD, thanks for this!

Unfortunately this game is really hard, what about update the HDF with a trainer?

This seems the most complete i found on the web:

Heya amighista

No problem

Agreed, the game is quite difficult.

Thanks for the link to the trainer, I'll see what I can do tonight after work

Again, thank you kindly amighista for bringing this trainer to my attention

It's da bomb, great options including a level skipper; what more could a mere mortal want? Lazzer comes through with the goods again when in regards to "AmigaCD" trainers

...so, both the following have now been updated to incorporate the trainer:

a) the .HDF file. [download from the EAB File Server "/~Uploads/DamienD/HDFs"]
b) the .LHA file (for real Amiga users). [download from the EAB File Server "/~Uploads/DamienD/LHAs"]

Damn, I forgot how much of a ball ache it is .LHA'ing everything up!!! After getting everything setup / configured correctly; this took an additional 1 hour 40 minutes to .LHA

This game isn't even that big (55MB when extracted); I've done way larger "AmigaCD" games... I must have had the patience of a saint

Anyway, enjoy my friends!!!

@amighista; I'm sure you already know this but there are many other "AmigaCD" --> ".LHA / .HDF" files that I've created to date. See here:

... [AmigaCD] Final Odyssey: Theseus Verses the Minotaur - .HDF & .LHA
... [AmigaCD] Foundation & Foundation Gold - .LHAs (for real Amiga users)
... [AmigaCD] Land of Genesis - .HDF & .LHA (for real Amiga users)
... [AmigaCD] onEscapee - .HDF & .LHA (for real Amiga users)
... [AmigaCD] Turbo Racer 3D - .LHA (for real Amiga users)
... [AmigaCD] T-zer0 - .HDF & .LHA (for real Amiga users)
... [AmigaCD] Ultimate XTreme Racing - .LHA (for real Amiga users)
... [AmigaCD] Uropa²: The Ulterior Colony - .LHA (for real Amiga users)

Hopefully I haven't forgotten any...

Thanks a lot DamienD, now i will be able to complete this very difficult game!

About your other AmigaCD LHA/HDF files you made: yes i am aware of these and i just completed last week your OnEscapee HDF version (works perfectly, no issues found).

In case you need suggestion for your next AmigaCD game to be HDFied my vote goes to Wasted Dreams, a real gem: http://hol.abime.net/1674

...yeah I agree; awesome game

I've actually done that and quite a few others already many, many months ago

The reason why I haven't shared these on EAB is that I had to install standard "Workbench 3.1" in order to view "readme" files etc. that need either "AmigaGuide" or "MultiView". These two programs have many files / dependancies and are not simple to get working without a full Workbench installation...

Rules are rules; and especially for me being a Global Moderator... I can't share them due to a complete Workbench 3.1 being installed

If I could work out how to create a bare-bones .HDF with the above 2 programs working then I could setup / configure and finally upload a few more [AmigaCD] titles...

Anyway, not home ATM... Send me a PM reminder and I'll give you a list of all my *personal* .HDFs

ransom1122 mentioned this to me in relation to the trainer:

Now something is wrong somewhere? Either the cheats ruin the game, or the game is ruined I have not yet tried the game without cheats. Not much time to test.

My score is 7,230. So see if you can drop any enemies before the score or 7 minute time limit…
I've now tested further, indeed if you set unlimited health or unlimited energy you cannot kill anyone and they keep getting back up

...time to look for a new trainer I guess.

Oh man, seems that I grabbed the wrong trainer

On the Kestra Amiga Demo Database website there are 2 x Hellfire / Lazzer trainers for this game...

Somehow I managed to download / use "The Strangers AGA CD-Rip +10" instead of "The Strangers AGA CD-Rip +14 (bugfixed)"

Off to test this one then

...don't really need to test this. Lazzer mentioned the exact issue in the trainer pages:

Ok, have now updated the .HDF

...now for the long part, updating the .LHA file.

Afterwards I will upload both files to the EAB File Server; stay tuned...

Yep, even trainers had to have bugfixes released occasionally! How did you manage to d/l the wrong one, though?! I noticed that there were two HF trainers on the Kestra website and checked to see if amighista had linked to the bugfixed one. He had, so I figured there was no need to say anything about it......d'oh!
