Hi!

But maybe this explanation helps clearing a little confusion: Consider typing WIN.COM in DOS like typing LoadWB on Amiga. On Amiga parts of workbench and GUI is in ROM. Think of a PC like an Amiga which would only come with DOS, no graphics.library, no intuition.library, no expansion.library, etc. The older Windows versions were more like adding graphics.library, intuition.library to a dos.library only system. Later Windows versions like 95 added expansion.library to the DOS. Basically the same way how AmigaOS got RTG and AHI... Last edited by BastyCDGS; 14 September 2018 at 20:00. Reason: Added AHI... |

So today I learnt that Linux is not an operating system, since it relies on various boot-strapper software to work, loadlin, amilinux, yaboot, uboot, grub, lilo...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coreboot Those boot strappers are only needed if the boot logic doesn't fit the MBR / boot block / boot sector (488 bytes for MBR) or to manage multiple operating systems at once per drive. I also don't see how you came to this conclusion. BTW: Try to bootstrap Windows 1.04 from grub without DOS layer. It won't work! Last edited by BastyCDGS; 20 September 2018 at 16:01. DOS layer is an integral part of Windows up to Win95.
WinXP or Win7 can be hosted by AROS in dual boot and this does not mean WinXP or Win7 that they are not independent OS. |

...can't believe this thread is still going; and has gone way off topic from the original post.
Anyway, thread title adjusted from "Emulation Windows 1.4" --> "Emulation Windows 1.04". |

Hi!
That's wrong! Win98, Win98SE and WinME are DOS based, too. Windows NT series was without DOS (including WinNT/Win2k/WinXP and all later ones). WinME forced auto-execution of WIN.COM to start WinME. The possibility in MSDOS.SYS to disable booting in the GUI was disabled. Quote:

I've always talked about these OS that integrate DOS, from Win2000 onwards it may not be so even if I have the doubt che io DOS
is still an integral part. Quote:
