Amberstar general tips

The new patches in the Ambermoon thread make me want to play it. I never have, but it looks like it comes highly recommended. However, I thought perhaps I should finish Amberstar first or it is likely that I never will. I started it some time earlier this year, but am not doing so well. My thief can't pick any locks that I find, and I'm also regretting that I took the first opportunity to level as a fighter and it won't let me multiclass.

I don't want to start it over many more times, so are there any general tips that you would like to share for an enjoyable experience?

Party:
You - fighter, Gryban - crystal inn - paladin, Silk - twinlake inn - thief, Drobanir - gemstone inn, Trasric - crystal inn, Crag - towre of white mages

I finished Amberstar with this party without troubles.

Thief gets 16 points every level. Train lock-picking first and at level 3 (pretty soon) he will be able to pick virtually any lock. You can also use lockpicks.
