Amiga 600 B/W on Composite

Hello everybody,

I hope someone can help. I bought an Amiga 600 and a Amiga 1080 Monitor on ebay. The monitor works fine. I hooked it up to my DVD player and everything if good. When I hook it up to my A600 with the Composite I get only B/W Screen and no color. What is broken on the Amiga? I have to mention that the Amiga 600 is from Germany and the Monitor is from here the US. Is that maybe a problem?

Thanks for your help

Probably. Your Amiga is PAL and the "monitor" is NTSC*

*NTSC: Not Twice Same Colour.

Didn't some amiga models have a b/w composite output?
Not sure about which ones do/don't.
So i'm pretty sure nothings broken.
Btw i don't think pal/ntsc affects color at all.
Only vertical sinc is different (50hz vs. 60hz)

@Smoorke,

You are correct as far as the Vertical rate is concerned and if using The RGB output then Colour is not an issue,

Composite Video is another matter however as PAL is encoded differently from NTSC & the Colour subcarrier is at a different Intermediate frequency.
PAL=4.43MHz NTSC=3.58MHz
PAL Colour of course is superior to the NTSC system in this respect as it is not affected by phase lags & neither requires "Tint" adjustment.
RF Modulator output adds additional issues as Frequency bands ie VHF / UHF get involved too as well as the Sound IF being different too.

The Older Amigas did indeed have a B/W video ouput as std (A2000/A500)

Hope this clears things up

TC

Process of elimination is the way to go. Did you check the colour control is not turned all the way down or faulty? (robably not but worth a look ) Have you tried the monitor by connecting it to an NTSC VCR, DVD Player or Games console so you know for sure whether it's the monitor at fault or the Amiga?

Assuming both devices are working properly the best way to go is to obtain a suitable RGB video cable which should give a colour display regardless of the Amiga or monitor's origin, unfortunately I'm not sure where to buy one of these but someone here is bound to know.

Edit: This is the type of cable you need.

If you have enough skills, it is very easy to make your own cable.

Look at behind the monitor for the RGB connector, buy a male version of it. Buy/rip from a dead peecee/steal/rent a female DB25 connector and buy 1.2 to 2m of shielded multi-vias cable (8 wires).

Cut the two rightmost pins of the DB25 and you will make a DB23 connector (the one needed for connecting the Amiga RGB port). Solder the wires accordingly to the monitor and Amiga pinouts.

Don't know where find the pinouts? Do you know http://www.allpinouts.org ?

BTW: there I just find the 1084 RGB pinout. Look at
http://www.allpinouts.org/index.php/...nalog%29_Video

The Amiga RGB port is
