A2620 ROM Update
I got an a2620 accelerator that has the old roms (wont work with kickstart 2.04+). I know I can order updated roms, but the price is too much for what it's worth. Are there any sources to get the roms cheaply? anyone have a eprom programmer?

I've uploaded the files to TheZone! for you.
My success at delivering EPROMs on time has not been good of late so I cannot offer to make them for you. |

Thanks for the files! I dont know anyone with a programmer, but I'll be sure to ask around. Anyone know what kind of (e)prom chips they are - the label covers the markings on my chips. Easier to ask than to open up, remove card, and peel back labels...

32kB / file -> times eight -> 256kb -> use 27256 EPROMs.

There's something I never really understood about ROM numbers
In this case I get that it's 27 and [Size in kbits].. But where does the 27 come from? It can't be number of legs... Oh.. and.. Thanks for the files alexh.. Been looking for them myself |

27 is just the model series of the chip.. The specs are governed by JEDEC, I think?
There are many other series.. 23, 25, 29, etc. Basically they determine the pinout of the package (amount of pins + what signal goes where) / also the characteristics of the die (is it flash, is it uv erase, etc). Alexh probably can tell you by heart what they mean, but at least 23, 25 and 27 series are EPROM (be they UV erase or OTP) and 29 are flash parts. |

Then...
How could you work out what rom you would need to use for something if you didn't know the chip number to start with? For example Kickstart ROMs and A2620 ROMs have different numbers of legs and are different sizes.. How would you know which ROM to buy? (Can you work it out somehow or would you have to do a lookup on a big table of chips until you found a matching one?) (Sorry to be a bother, but it'll hopefully save me asking questions in the future when I need to find a certain chip.. possibly not even an amiga related one) |

First you look at the size, looking at the binary will usually give you that. Number of EPROMS, Usually 1, 2 or 4. (If you have more than 1 then you divide the size accordingly). Data width, do you need 8-bit or 16-bit EPROMS. I dont think there are 32-bit EPROMS, usually you have to use more than one and double up. Sometimes to need 1 16-bit EPROM, sometimes 2x 8-bit ones etc. Finally pinout. If there are multiple chips with the same size and width it usually means they have different pinouts... then you'll have to refer to the schematics of the device you are using. 27 may have something to do with pinout, however there are at least two different pinouts for the SAME size EPROMS in the 27 series. Do you have a link to a list of EPROM types listed with size, data width and pinout?

This is the best resource I've seen for sizes is this PDF.
http://www-us.mastek.com.ua/.db/raw/...eprom-0603.pdf Unfortunately it is not 100% accurate as I have an AM27C400-150DC in front of me and that is not in that guide! The Pinouts are generally only different for data widths. All 8-bit's are relatively the same. All 16-bit the same and all 8-bit/16-bit ones are about the same! There are the odd difference with programming voltage pins. Here are the differences between 8-bit EPROMS http://www.knurl.com/Eproms.html I've not seen as good a resource for 16-bit or 8&16-bit ones. Last edited by alexh; 04 July 2007 at 16:36. |

Thanks for the link
That's really helpful Funny you should mention AM27C400-150DC... I got a few of them here myself... (And some AM27C400-120DC.. which going by that guide are the same but faster access time) |

Solution?
I think I may have found a work-around. When I got the card, I was planning on using mkick to soft-kick 3.1 (v40.63). However, the version on aminet (1.9) gives a strange error message when in 020 mode (works perfectly if I force 68k). I found an older version (1.3) on one of the LSD disks. This version seems to work PERFECTLY . Are there any know issues with mkick 1.3? Are there any versions between 1.3 and 1.9?

I'm not 100% sure but I think they are:
U4 = 390282-07 U5 = 390283-07 i.e. v7 I havent owned a 2620 for a long time (10 years this year!) but when I did these files allowed the use of KS2.04 |

A bit OT: out of curiosity, what would happen if you incorrectly wrote the ROMs, put them in and tried to boot?

With this roms, now my Amiga 20000 works in OS 2.1. Genial... thanks
If you write bad the eproms I think that you get a black screen.. no more. |

You're welcome. This data/information should have been made free and widespread a long time ago.
