I will be producing a WiModem-232, which can be ordered with either a male or female DB-25 connector. This product will work with ALL computers having a DB-25 serial port. By ALL, I mean Amiga 500/600/1200/2000/3000/4000, and 1000 (it's serial port connector is backwards from the others), IBM PC, Atari ST, Tandy laptop, etc. Anything with a traditional DB-25 serial port (a DB-9 to DB-25 cable can be used to convert DB-9 based ports).

This is a really good news!! What is the estimate price? Is it a similar price as the WiModem for C64?

Plipbox, only with wifi-module instead of ethernet. It can be done.

Awesome! Can't wait to get a couple of these. Same OLED screen, I presume?
Any estimated timeline for this?

I hate to be a killjoy but the Amiga serial port is too slow for good transfer rates. That's why the PlipBox used the parallel port instead.

While I agree with you that the serial port is slow for transfer, it is still perfect for enjoying BBSs just as it was when we used modems way back when. I don't think this device was ever intended for general networking and transferring disk images, etc. There are better solutions for that.

How would you connect to a router with bluetooth and access the internet? The purpose of a Wifi Modem is to connect to a router and hence the internet. Bluetooth wouldn't be good for that. Not to mention the limited range.

This device clearly has a market and there are plenty of people, as evidenced on other boards, that enjoy connecting to BBSs and telnet boards with their classic computers. This is an easy solution, compared to the others that are out there, for telnet BBS type connections, anyway.

This seems pretty easy to me and cheap to do, then once it is set up you just telnet to your BBS. This requires another machine which has an internet connection.

I suppose if your household only has an Internet connection with a WiFi Router and no other computers other than Amigas you're out of luck. Bluetooth is usually good for around 20' so as long as the other machine connected to the internet is in the same room you can do it.

Seems like a similar way to crack the same egg.

Bluetooth would be no different then connecting with a NULL modem cable. You would still have to first connect to a host PC to share its internet connection. A WiModem plugged directly in to the C64 or Amiga needs no other computer to connect as it can connect directly to the router and hence the internet.

Same with the Raspberry Pi method. You still have to connect to that and it has to be setup and nearby. So yeah that is a great solution for the tinkerers but *anybody* can use the WiModem because it is that easy...

For me it boils down to convenience. I could easily set up a RPI or null modem cable (which I have done in the past with Amiga Explorer) but this is so much easier and I don't need any other computer near by to use is.

The WiModem itself can run at up to 4Mbps for serial. The Amiga obviously can't through it's port, but it can use 57600 easy enough. I believe higher baud rates are possible using a special device driver.

I have been tempted to make a parallel port version, but then it would not be compatible with other retro computers. The demand from the Tandy 100 laptop community alone has been 10x as much as the Amiga community (who knew)?

I made the WiModem-232 in a plastic case that plugs into a DB-25 serial port. There is a power input plug (5v wall wart), and there is no display on this version. Retail price will be $49.95. All of the same features of the C64 version, such as WPS setup, remote update capability, and the upcoming virtual drive features.

Cool. Is there going to be a version with a display? I find it handy.

Send a message via ICQ to Predseda
Do you have any photo of a prototype in the supposed plastic case?

I left instructions on the sys.cbm news group a week or more ago on how to do this yourself with a raspberry pi and a max-232. I used an older 2011 first gen Pi with a wifi USB dongle. Cheers, c

So you ditched the idea of powering it from the computer? I guess only certain computers provide the necessary current over serial to power this thing? Either way, very cool and I'm in on one. Looking forward to "dialing up" some BBSs.
