Yes my preference is WinRAR but I can see Ian's point, he's using a dial-up at home so he would like to d/l or u/l as small a file as possible. I can remember using slow modems, like the old 60/90 baud acoustic modems way back in the day, so even with a good 56k connection it still could him hours to get some d/l'd.

Is there a section in the basics FAQ that includes compression utils? Just wondering if this is something that we could contribute to as we have all seem to be testing different apps on their respective compression attributes

Well, I tested them all last night, and here's the run down

Best to worst:-
  1. 7-Zip
  2. WinACE (Used to use this all the time)
  3. WinRAR
  4. Power Archiver's Zip's
  5. WinZIP
Feel free to add to/contradict this, but I think you get the same results as I have.

Original Files (Whales Voyage CD32 ISO + Audio Track)
----------------

10,000,384 bytes - WHALE.ISO
4,161,619 bytes - TRACK 02.MP3

Compressed
----------------

6,385,062 - WhaleVoyageCD32iso.7z (7-Zip)
6,606,804 - WhaleVoyageCD32iso.rk (RK)
6,629,427 - WhaleVoyageCD32iso.cab (CAB, ie. LZX)
6,633,557 - WhaleVoyageCD32iso.rar (RAR)
6,760,012 - WhaleVoyageCD32iso.ace (Ace)
7,120,511 - WhaleVoyageCD32iso.tar.bz2 (Tar stored, then BZip)
7,278,162 - WhaleVoyageCD32iso.bh (BH)
7,278,283 - WhaleVoyageCD32iso.zip (Zip)
7,288,479 - WhaleVoyageCD32iso.tar.gz (Tar stored, then GZip)
7,394,449 - WhaleVoyageCD32iso.lzh (LHA)
14,164,480 - WhaleVoyageCD32iso.tar (Tar stored)

========

Best option : CAB or RAR.
Reason : The compression time is too high for 7-Zip and RK. It's not worth it

========

All of the above are using command line. GUI shit is not accepted

Okay, this is good info, I also understand your reasons for either RAR or CAB files. At issue here is not the compression time, it's the final file size. I'm sure there are plenty of users of this board that still use dial-up. Not everyone can afford or even get a broadband connection.

Burning back .ISO + .MP3 files

Hi!

Just wondering since I got some CD32 isos here (not the DOTC2 yet though) how do I burn them ? What software (WIN) do I use ?
Is the DATA track (ISO ) a MODE1 2048 track ? Or something else ?

Fireburner. Just drag and drop data and wav/mp3-files. (But make sure track order is correct before burning...)

CD32 data track is always mode 1 but data track's sector size depends on how it was read. Sector size is 2048 bytes if only user data was read and it is 2352 if whole raw sector was read. (sync, header, user data and error correction data) CD32 does not care, but better burn with correct sector size...

Why use .iso ? .bin/.cue format has built in crc checking to be able to test if the image from the CD is good with no errors. You can use tools like CDMage or Bin chunker to test the image (and sometimes fix) for errors that might have been caused by extra jitter, scratch in the cd, or the cd being really dirty.

Plus another problem with .iso is there is so many variants to worry about especially when trying to burn it back. Ez Cd Deluxe makes a slightly different iso then Nero, Disc Juggler... etc.

I type iso because it's far easy (and shorter) than type CD image file, say iso people know what your talking about

I don't .iso anything, Blindwrite and CloneCD's own format's are what I actually use

Search and replace with hex editor. (There are probably easier ways..)

You can try WinISO. However, messing with the cd label could mess up the the game since it might check cd label while it's booting.

thanx !

Got the image ...

Anyway, it seems that Project32 runs it "ALMOST" perfect... the only problem seems to be when you are raiding the castle or rescuing the princess... you automatically lose after a few seconds.

Infact THE SAME problem was with the -so called- RIP version of DOTC2 ... the raiding the castle doesn't work.

Sent an email to the author of P32 and he confirmed it is a bug in the emulation and he is working on it !

Now, I would really like to see Microcosm on this emulator... I know everyone thinks it is a lame game, but it has some sort of cult status on the CD32, so it might be fun to see it. Does one need FMV cartridge to make it run or ?

That would be good to see.... by the way you don't need the FMV cart for Microcosm.
