Hi Phill,

I'm pretty new to this scene (an old Amiga hand 5 years ago, but new to emulation!).

I've been checking out a site called http://www.back2roots.org

From what I can see this is a very impressive website, I advise you to bookmark it.

There it has a list of "all" Amiga games, and how to configure them in WinUAE. Check out the page http://www.back2roots.org/Games/List/R/ - it tells you the WinUAE config you should use (ECS13) but they state there it doesn't go past the "Rainbow Project" logo. Maybe this game doesn't work at all ?

If that doesn't work then let us know - like I said I'm new - maybe this is a known "problem game" ?

I wasn't even aware there were issues with this game. I always test games first on winfellow because it's more system friendly and then afterwards with WinUAE if it fails in Winfellow. In my opinion Winfellow is great because it actually allows me a fluid emulation (which winUAE still has to show me if I want sound).

Question

I'd have to say the only version of either emulator that works totally fine with speed & perfect sound is WinUAE 08.8r8.
WinUAE 0814x are okay but sound is a little choppy.
But latest versions of WinUAE & Winfellow seem to force a choice of putting up with choppy sound & speed or better sound & a jerky screen update.
Why can't they use the sound system of WinUAE 08.8r8??

Re:Rainbow islands, don't worry, haven't had any luck running it on WinUAE either!!

Unhappy Rainbow Islands with WinUAE?

Is there a way to get Rainbow Islands by Graftgold to work with WinUAE? It gets to the loading screen which then fades to black and then stops responding. I have tried a few settings with memory configurations, different CPU types and even tried Kickstart 1.3, but with no success. Thanks for any help.

This is not much help, I suppose. But why play a lesser version?

Use the original arcade roms and Raine.

Because the developers (including Bernd Schmidt) say that the 0.8.8R8 sound system is broken. I've yet to believe that, too, but he's the UAE developer and must be right more likely than me.
Brian King confessed that he never understood that sound system. It's not from him, but by former UAE-Win32 developer Mathias Ortmann.

Get MAME32 and download the Rainbow Island ROM instead - why play the Amiga version when you can play the original?

As earlier discussed on the GAEB, there is a problem with the loading routines in Rainbow Island and WinUAE (thx Pfloyd ) but he also discovered a "trick" to play it anyway, I hope I get the description right

1. Start WinUAE and Rainbow Island adf
2. Wait for the black screen
3. be sure to have the action replay rom installed
4. activate the AR and type "e 96" and hit ENTER
5. overwrite Bit 9 (the 10th bit from the right) with 1 and confirm with ENTER
6. then leave the AR with <X><ENTER> and enjoy the game

I'm still working on this one. The Action Replay trick is of course not the "final solution". I don't want to release patched adf-files that avoid the problem. The problem is inside WinUAE and if it gets solved, it may enhance the compatibility with other games.

The master DMA is switched off somehow, maybe due to a bug in WinUAE's copper emulation. RI is hard to trace, because it makes intensive use of traps, interrupts and exception vectors.

The problem is to find out what makes WinUAE switch off the master DMA. I've emailed Toni another way to get it working (obviously it has nothing to do with the copperlists). Maybe he will find the cause. I admit that this one is getting too hard for me as I do not have any idea of what's going on in WinUAE, and I've got no time to find it out. But the first steps are made...

It works fine in Winfellow without all the above fuss. My version is cracked by Vision Factory.

@Paul

Yes, that's right...

Concerning the Vision Factory crack, I can tell you that this is very likely a buggy version. Don't be disappointed when you play island 4 and 5. Some levels are corrupted. Parts of the disk were overwritten with garbage and some source text (loader) from Vision Factory.

Try the "Gremlin & Hero of Scoopex UK" version instead.
It has only one little sprite error at island 6, but the all the rest is OK.

BTW:
All versions with the "Rainbow project" loading screen are preview versions. The final versions display some other picture. But I found no differences in the game levels so far.
